Een rondvaarttocht door Amsterdam werd in 2022 door Tripadvisor als ‘beste ervaring ter wereld’ uitgeroepen. Daar moet dan wel een kern van waarheid inzitten, toch? Als je ‘t aan zanger Harry Slinger vraagt is dat zeker waar, alleen liep hij zelf tegen één probleem aan: al die rondvaarttochten waren ingesteld op buitenlandse toeristen. Dus ging hij op zoek naar een oplossing en benaderde Smidtje Luxury Cruises met de vraag of ze niet samen konden werken aan een vaartocht speciáál voor alle Nederlanders die net als Harry van onze hoofdstad houden. En zo geschiedde. Al 13 jaar laat geboren en getogen Amsterdammer Harry (je kent ‘m misschien wel van zijn band Drukwerk) tijdens de Slingertocht de mooiste plekjes van de stad zien. Daarover vertelt hij niet alleen weetjes, maar ook persoonlijke verhalen. Daarnaast rijgt hij de hele boel nog eens aan elkaar door middel van een hoop Nederlandstalige meezingers uit zijn Drukwerk-tijd. Niet echt iets voor toeristen dus. Samen met schipper Leo (die dan wel een Rotterdammer is), de pianist én de zingende bediening maakt Harry de theatertocht tot één gróót feest, wat niet zou misstaan in een Jordanees bruincafé. Vanaf het water zie je de stad ook nét even wat anders. Sowieso is ’t al een hele andere beleving om eens écht de tijd te nemen om te kijken, in plaats van gehaast op je fiets of opzij springend voor het verkeer. Nu kun je met alle rust kijken naar alle prachtige gebouwen en gevels aan de grachten van het UNESCO werelderfgoed. Of zoals Harry dat zegt: “De stad trekt aan je voorbij. Het is bijna een film. Ik zie het eigenlijk altijd als decor.” Van de Dokwerker als Harry’s “ultieme toonbeeld van Amsterdams verzet” tot aan de oude pakhuizen uit de VOC, in de tour komt de lange stadsgeschiedenis tot leven. En voor mensen die zeuren dat Amsterdam zo is veranderd de laatste tijd heeft Harry nog wel een boodschap: “Amsterdam is nooit hetzelfde gebleven. Het is altijd één grote vergaarbak geweest van mensen van over de héle wereld. Het is nog steeds een fantastische stad.” En zo is het maar net. A real B2EMO was featured at the recent premiers of Star Wars Andor and several influencers have posted footage on social media. As far as I can tell this was built by the same team that built BB-8 which includes Josh Lee and Matt Denton, and you can see the BB-8 internal animatronics reveal from Star Wars Celebration 2016 in the Star Wars YouTube channel. At first Star Wars B2EMO doesn’t look like anything special - it’s a beaten-up looking salvage Droid. During the Star Wars Andor premier however, the first thing I noticed was that it had Mecanum wheels, which makes it omni-directional. I’ve done a few projects with standard omni wheels in my channel, but never Mecanum wheels. These wheels have little wheels around their circumference which are angled at 45 degrees. Mirrored pairs are usually installed on the robot, and depending on the combination of rotation on each wheel, the robot can move in any direction. B2 is even more complicated than that though. Each foot can lift up and down independently, and also the whole wheel-base can extend to make it longer and presumably more stable. There are also a number of other features in the body, which can boost itself up to make the Droid taller. There are rotating parts inside the body, and the head can also move independently in multiple axes. And all of this is a real piece of engineering.
