The status of a newly signed U.S.-Saudi nuclear deal is in question after President Trump made the surprise announcement that the deal is off unless Saudi Arabia normalizes relations with Israel. The deal paves the way for Saudi civil nuclear development, although critics warn that it could lead to the proliferation of nuclear weapons in the politically volatile Middle East. Saudi Arabia has long maintained that it would not officially recognize Israel by joining the Abraham Accords, the U.S.-negotiated diplomatic deal between Israel and a number of Arab states, until there is a pathway toward the creation of a Palestinian state. The Abraham Accords provision indicates that “Israel is calling the shots again,” when it comes to U.S. policy in the Middle East, notes Daniel Levy of the U.S./Middle East Project. Levy says it is unlikely that Saudi Arabia will agree to Trump’s new conditions, at a cost to U.S. business interests, which stand to profit handily from the sale of nuclear energy technology to the oil-rich kingdom.

Tientallen sekswerkers op de Wallen zijn volgens justitie slachtoffer geworden van grootschalige mensenhandel en seksuele uitbuiting. Afgelopen dinsdag werden zeven Roemeense mannen aangehouden op verdenking van uitbuiting van de vrouwen. Vier verdachten werden opgepakt in de stad, de andere drie in Roemenië. Alle verdachten zijn tussen de 34 en 45 jaar oud. De politie publiceert het nieuws met video's van de arrestaties en een interview met een van de slachtoffers. "Ik dacht dat ik een vriend had, maar het bleek dat hij mij uitbuitte", vertelt een Roemeense vrouw anoniem in een video van de politie. Ook zij was slachtoffer van mensenhandel. "Een persoon kan vriendelijk overkomen, zeggen dat hij van je houdt of doen alsof jullie werken aan een gemeenschappelijk doel." Begin dit jaar kreeg de politie anonieme meldingen over misstanden in de raamprostitutie, dit was aanleiding voor een grootschalig onderzoek. Rechercheurs van het Team Migratiecriminaliteit en Mensenhandel kregen hierbij een groep Roemeense mannen in beeld die volgens de politie een deel van de Wallen als hun eigen territorium beschouwden. Volgens de politie moesten sekswerkers die in dat gebied wilden werken wekelijks grote geldbedragen afstaan aan de groep. Daar stond geen enkele dienst of bescherming tegenover. Wie niet betaalde, zou zijn bedreigd. De vrouwen, allemaal afkomstig uit Roemenië, zeggen met valse beloftes - zoals hogere inkomsten en betere werkomstandigheden - naar Amsterdam zijn gelokt. Eenmaal aangekomen bleek de beloften niet te worden waargemaakt. "Veel vrouwen geloven dat dit gedrag normaal is, of doen het uit noodzaak. Maar manipulatie, druk uitoefenen en machtsmisbruik zijn ook een vorm van uitbuiting. Een partner die jou uitbuit zodat hij goed kan leven, is niet normaal." De politie vermoedt dat de vrouwen het grootste deel van hun inkomsten moesten afstaan aan de verdachten. Ook zouden de mannen hebben bepaald waar de vrouwen woonden en huur hebben gevraagd voor die woningen. De recherche gaat ervan uit dat de vrouwen met intimidatie, bedreiging en in sommige gevallen geweld onder controle werden gehouden. Volgens het onderzoek hielden de verdachten toezicht op de Wallen, liepen zij in groepen rond en gaven zij op intimiderende wijze aanwijzingen aan de vrouwen tijdens hun werk. Daarnaast zouden verschillende verdachten een relatie hebben gehad met slachtoffers. In sommige gevallen kregen zij samen kinderen. Deze relaties werden gebruikt om vrouwen afhankelijk te maken, vermoedt de politie. Ook werd in sommige gevallen een gezamenlijke toekomst, huwelijk of woning in Roemenië beloofd aan slachtoffers, waardoor zij gemakkelijker onder druk konden worden gezet. Hoewel de verdachten volgens de politie geen zichtbaar werk hadden, zouden zij een luxe levensstijl hebben geleid. De recherche zag dat het geld onder andere aan horeca, dure kleding, drugs en casinobezoeken werd besteed, terwijl de vrouwen achter de ramen werkten. De politie houdt rekening met jaarinkomsten van sekswerkers die kunnen oplopen tot tussen de één en anderhalve ton. Midden jaren tachtig begon het Amsterdamse leven voor Elan. Hij had nooit een zangstudie gevolgd, maar de ontmoeting met zijn huidige partner liet hem kennis maken met muziek. Gijs van der Grinten was violist bij het Nationaal Ballet en hoorde de stem van Philippe. "Jij moet iets met die stem doen", zei hij en zo geschiedde. Elan schreef zich in voor het chanson concours van de Alliance Française, wat plaatsvond in De Kleine Komedie. Elan won de eerste prijs. Samen met zijn partner en zijn zus, vormden ze het Gemini Ensemble. Later kregen ze ook nog een Edison voor hun eerste album. Na het uitbrengen van deze klassieke stijl, was het tijd voor andere genres. Andere stijlen spraken hem ook aan. Hij werkte en trad op met artiesten als Cor Bakker, Louis van Dijk, Liesbeth List en Laura Fygi. Veel nummers die hij dit weekend gaat zingen heeft hij nog nooit eerder gezongen. Daardoor is het voor hem extra spannend, maar zenuwachtig is hij niet: "Ik heb hier al vaker opgetreden. Toch is er al een band, tussen de zaal en ik." Their latest targets are those born to noncitizen or permanent resident parents in U.S. territories like Puerto Rico, where the Supreme Court has said citizenship is granted by statute and full constitutional protections do not apply. The proposed "End Birthright Citizenship for the Territories Act" would create "a subclass of people who can be discriminated against" and "disregarded as human beings" in the U.S. territories, says Puerto Rican legal scholar Efrén Rivera Ramos, who joins Democracy Now! from Puerto Rico's capital city, San Juan. While the bill's sponsor, Republican Congressmember Morgan Griffith of Virginia, says he's focused only on so-called birth tourism, Rivera Ramos says the language of the law is less clear. The quasi-colonial status of Puerto Rico is also being highlighted by the 10th anniversary of PROMESA, the Obama-era legislation that created a U.S.-appointed fiscal control board to manage the island's finances and restructure debt. In practice, PROMESA "has been a failure," says Rivera Ramos, asserting the anti-democratic structure has imposed austerity measures and done little to address corruption, waste and inefficiency that plague the economy. Sparked by the leak of national exam questions, tens of thousands of young people have taken to the streets. They are protesting under the banner of the Cockroach Janta (People's) Party — a new party named to reflect the words of India's chief justice, who compared unemployed youth to cockroaches and parasites. The movement has only swelled in response to a violent crackdown on protesters. Although the protesters' initial demands were for the resignation of the country's education minister, "everything has shifted to directly attacking [Prime Minister Narendra] Modi," says Indian writer Arundhati Roy, who joins us from New Delhi, the physical center of a movement that first found exponential success online. The erosion of democratic principles under Modi's right-wing Bharatiya Janata (Indian People's) Party is being contested on a large scale for the first time, says Roy. "It's really a generation whose parents and grandparents wore those Modi masks and chanted 'Modi, Modi, Modi,' and got him into power.
