John Keely was the founder of the Keely Motor Company. He announced that he had discovered a new physical force, one that, if harnessed, would produce unheard-of power. He claimed to be able to produce from a quart of water enough fuel to move a 30-car train from Philadelphia to New York City. Scientists and engineers scoffed at his unverified claims. After his death, an investigation was carried out, and examination of his apparatus - a supposed perpetual motion machine - showed that, rather than a new force, tubes of compressed air or a form of hydraulic power activated the machinery. In today's video we see if there are any lessons investors can learn from the story of John Ernst Worrell Keely. Miriam Meyer is a German activist with the environmental protest group Letzte Generation (Last Generation). Since joining the group she has, in her own words, been “getting arrested full-time”. The reason: blocking busy German highways in an effort to disrupt business-as-usual. In this interview with Mehran Khalili, recorded in June 2022, Miriam explains the tactics and the motivation behind the group’s radical actions, and the establishment’s response. At a time in history that requires people willing to go to great lengths for their cause, is Last Generation’s model of protest the way forward? — Frontline is a DiEM TV show about people who confront power, to figure out how they do it. The goal: to give you tips, tactics and inspiration for your own activist projects. Winter Is Coming…and Europe is facing a full-blown energy crisis. Power companies are hiking the price of electricity, making a tough winter even worse. And this time, it’s not just the poorest who are affected. The middle class is also feeling the squeeze. How much of this is due to how our politicians have set up Europe’s energy market, and how much to corporate greed? What other factors are at play? And how can we get out of this mess? In the year 1096, western Europe embarked on its first crusade to the Holy Land. Marching tens of thousands of people half way across the world to defend the Byzantine Empire from the rising power of the Seljuk Turks, but also to capture Jerusalem from the Fatimid Caliphate. What followed was a period of brutal conquest, with religion used to justify the most cruel violence. This video was made in partnership with Paradox Interactive, the people behind Crusader Kings 3. Class 2, The Genesis of Nations. Timothy Snyder is the Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. He speaks five and reads ten European languages. Ukraine must have existed as a society and polity on 23 February 2022, else Ukrainians would not have collectively resisted Russian invasion the next day. What does it mean for a nation to exist? Is this a matter of structures, actions, or both? Why has the existence of Ukraine occasioned such controversy? In what ways are Polish, Russian, and Jewish self-understanding dependent upon experiences in Ukraine? Just how and when did a modern Ukrainian nation emerge? For that matter, how does any modern nation emerge? Why some and not others? Can nations be chosen, and can choices be decisive? If so, whose, and how? Ukraine was the country most touched by Soviet and Nazi terror: what can we learn about those systems, then, from Ukraine? Is the post-colonial, multilingual Ukrainian nation a holdover from the past, or does it hold some promise for the future? Curious on how to record found sounds and make music with it? In this video I show you my creative process on how I turn field recordings and found sounds into a full track. I go into the history of found sounds and foley from composers like Edgard Varèse, Steve Reich and John Cage to modern film music and sound design from the likes of Trent Reznor & Hans Zimmer. We also explore the early work of sample producer and composer Pierre Schaeffer whos “Treatise on Musical Objects” was instrumental in forging the path on modern film soundscapes. We want to be part of your friendship journey, so we’ve created a few things you can share with new and old friends: https://kgs.link/shop-166 Sources & further reading: https://sites.google.com/view/sources-friendship/ Friends make life good. They provide the scaffolding that makes it not just bearable but fun. They give us a sense of meaning and purpose and are a source of security, self esteem and happiness. Almost nothing predicts how happy you will be as how connected you feel and a lack of social connection is associated with a number of diseases and a shorter life. This particular murti of the goddess Kali was made especially for the exhibition Feminine Power: the divine to the demonic. However, commissioning a new murti, and then transporting it to London from Kolkata in India, isn't as straight forward as you might think. Kali is a deity used to being worshipped, not necessarily being transported in a box or fumigated for pest management. So in order to appease the goddess, and calm her annoyance at being transported in that box, devotees from the London Durgotsav Committee welcomed the new goddess Kali murti to the Museum, and performed a ceremony to calm her. Kali is one of the most prominent and widely worshipped goddesses in India, particularly in West Bengal. Traditionally these icons are made of clay from the banks of the river Ganges but, to ensure her longevity, this murti is constructed with fibreglass painted in black oil-based colour and her hair is from jute fibre. During construction the artist placed some clay inside her so she will always have a part of the sacred Ganges within. Our #FemininePowerExhibition highlights the many faces of feminine power – ferocious, beautiful or creative. The show is open until 25 September – book your tickets today: http://ow.ly/kK7050Kg61w

The electrons are back! This is the first of three videos discussing electricity - what is it, how does it work, how do we use it? This first installment talks about the speed of electricity and electrical signals in wires. Next up is Ohm's law, and what resistance really does in circuits, and third, I'll be taking another look at the experiment featured on Veritasium last year, building on the first two videos to explore the mechanism that couples the two long wires with a little more scrutiny. Enjoy! Ad: JLCPCB 3D printing from $1, Get $54 new user coupon from https://jlcpcb.com/3d-printing?from=JamesBruton Free online Gerber Viewer from https://jlcpcb.com/RGE I recently built an eight wheeled snake bike, and that was based on a smaller version I built some time ago. And before that I built a worm robot which moves by expanding and contracting. This is known as a system of Peristalsis, which from Wikipedia, is defined as a radially symmetrical contraction and relaxation of muscles that propagates in a wave down a tube. While I was researching these projects, I came across another experimental robot which uses a wave motion, with the wave running down its body, to propel it forwards. This is a bit like how snakes actually move, Well, the ones without wheels or legs of course. My original plan for this project was to make a surf board you can ride on the land, but using a mechanical wave like this to propel me along, and use a large set of mountain board wheels for steering. However, I thought I’d try to make a smaller version of this mechanism first so see where the potential problems could be. It looks like the mechanical wave is formed by a thing that looks a bit like a giant corkscrew, which simply rotates inside a flexible track, so I 3D printed a former which I used to try to bend some wire around. I wanted this to be quite stiff though because in my version it has to support the whole weight of the machine, so I used 4mm diameter stainless steel rod. This was pretty hard to bend into shape by hand, and my resulting screw shape doesn’t quite match the former or the original CAD design, but we’ll see what problems that causes later. Until 1989, the village of Dafen in the city of Shenzhen, China was little more than a hamlet. It now has a population of 10,000, including hundreds of peasants-turned oil painters. In the many studios, and even in the alleyways, Dafen's painters turn out thousands of replicas of world-famous Western paintings. Nobody thinks anything of an order for 200 Van Goghs. To meet their deadlines, painters sleep on the floor between clotheslines strung with masterpieces. In 2015, the turnover in painting sales was over $65 million. Local painter Zhao has a dream to travel to Amsterdam to see the works of his legendary associate. After struggling and saving, he fulfils dream. In Europe, his encounter with van Gogh's paintings brings an epiphany. Although dejected at the revelation, Zhao is inspired by van Gogh's paintings and the hardships he suffered, and resolves to dedicate himself to his own original art Subscribe and click the bell icon to get more arts content every week: youtube.com/c/PerspectiveArts Perspective is YouTube's home for the arts. It’s been 3 months since I tore my medial meniscus and its felt like such a long buildup waiting for surgery. I first spent about 2 weeks just limping around on it, assuming it would go away. Then by the time we figured out what was going on, it was hard to schedule and it just has felt like a bit of waiting. Ultimately, on the spectrum of medical curve balls, this knee situation is an easy one - and im thankful for that. There’s a clear treatment, which is very effective and i should be back to full capacity in a matter of weeks. At the same time, it’s been a humbling experience to reconsider all the privileges of health and ability that i take for granted every day. It won’t be the last time i experience some health related compromise in life - and my big takeaway is that i hope to do a better job of appreciating my health until then. Class 1 is an introduction to the course and an exploration of questions raised by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
