Het is zo ver! De tweede OmmetjemetTom X FanClub Centrum podcast is nu te beluisteren via Spotify en te bekijken via YouTube. Deze keer lopen Tom, Willemijn en Josephine een blokje door het oudste gedeelte van de stad. Van de Maatschappij Arti et Amicitiae, de befaamde kunst sociëteit op het hoekje Spui en Rokin, via het standbeeld van Wilhelmina en metrostation Rokin, naar het historische kassahuisje van Rederij Kooij. Vervolgens legt Tom uit hoe de Langebrugsteeg aan zijn naam komt, er was namelijk een tijd dat hier een lange brug over het stromende Rokin begon, totdat het in 1937 werd gedempt om parkeerplekken aan te leggen. Via de Grimburgwal (een modderig stromend beekje), het Gebed Zonder End (ingang nonnenklooster) en de Sleutelbrug (vernoemd naar een oude bierbrouwerij) wijst Tom ons op een eeuwenoud straatnaambordje. Is het je ooit opgevallen dat hier een aanduiding is voor de “Fluwelen Burgwal”? Dit stukje van de Oudezijds Voorburgwal werd zo genoemd omdat hier in de middeleeuwen de voorname Amsterdamse families woonden. Als je het weet, vergeet je het nooit meer. Via de oudste gracht van Amsterdam belanden we bij The Grand, nu een hotel, vroeger ons stadhuis. Via de Lommertbrug steken we over en staan we stil bij het schitterende oude poortje van De Brakke Grond uit 1624. Na een kleine omweg naar de cryptische tekst op de luifel op Oudezijds Voorburgwal 272 ("De raad van Amsterdam is hierover zeker: Je kunt hier beter binnengaan dan bij de apotheker”) komen we bij het eindpunt in de Enge Lombardsteeg. Hier vind je sinds 1614 de Stadsbank van Lening, ofwel "de lommerd”. Zo is de naam van deze steeg dankzij Tom ook weer verklaard.  Elke maand verschijnt er een nieuw, verrassend Ommetje op de leukste plekjes van ’t centrum. This allows the back wheels to drift sideways. There are lots of examples of these sorts of vehicles on YouTube, but driving while drifting under control takes skill. But what about if we were to make a drift cart where the amount of drift can be precisely controlled. I previously built a bicycle with an omni-wheel on the front, facing sideways. This allowed the bike to balance sideways like a Segway or Hoverboard, but still ride like a normal bike. An omni-wheel has lots of small wheels around the circumference of a big wheel, so it can be driven in one direction and slide passively in the other. Sierlijke gevels, bijzondere woonboten en de de talloze bruggen waar elke toerist wel even voor stopt om een reeks foto’s te maken: onze zeventiende-eeuwse grachten zijn misschien wel het pronkstuk van het centrum. Maar wij Amsterdammers wonen eraan, fietsen er dagelijks langs en varen er regelmatig doorheen. Kortom: grachten zijn onderdeel van ons leven en daarom vergeten we soms bíjna hoe bijzonder ze eigenlijk zijn. En dat is jammer, want bijzonder zijn ze. Maar na een bezoekje aan de tentoonstelling ‘Waterkracht’ in het Grachtenmuseum, zie je dat direct weer. Als je over de Amsterdamse bruggen wandelt, zal het vast niet snel in je opkomen om een lijntje uit te gooien en je avondmaaltijd bij elkaar te vissen. Laat staan een biertje drinken dat gebrouwen is van het water uit de gracht. Terwijl Amsterdam juist is ontstaan als een vissersdorpje. Door vervuiling en het gebruik van de grachten als open riool werd het een steeds minder goede plek om te vissen. Maar hoe staat het nu dan met de kwaliteit van het water? Dit en meer kom je te weten tijdens de nieuwe tentoonstelling. Hierin staat het water in de Amsterdamse grachten namelijk centraal. Deze bijzondere verhalen over het grachtenwater van toen en nu worden verteld aan de hand van foto’s van niemand minder dan fotograaf Gosse Bouma. Gosse Bouma maakt zijn foto’s vaak in de vroege uurtjes, wanneer de meeste Amsterdammers nog liggen te slapen. Hierdoor zien zijn foto’s er net uit alsof hij ze ook 100 jaar geleden had kunnen maken, wat bijzondere plaatjes oplevert. En dat is voor jou als bezoeker win-win, want naast dat je van alles over het grachtenwater te weten komt, kan je ook nog eens Gosse’s prachtige foto’s bewonderen. Wat Gosse zelf over de tentoonstelling zegt? “Een tentoonstelling die het bezoeken waard is om erachter te komen hoe bijzonder de grachten zijn. En dat mijn foto’s daarvoor zijn gebruikt, vind ik bijzonder. Er zijn heel veel verhalen die ik nog niet wist.” Het Grachtenmuseum, bevindt zich – heel toepasselijk - in het 17-eeuwse grachtenpand aan de Herengracht 386. Naast de tijdelijke tentoonstelling, die tot eind januari 2023 loopt, is hier nog veel meer te zien en doen. Zo kan je onder andere door middel van een multimediale tentoonstelling ervaren hoe de Amsterdamse grachten zo’n 400 jaar terug tot aan nu hun stempel drukken op de stad.
