The tuna feed with their heads up, making them susceptible to the hook in the upper mouth. 8:33:The teamwork and energy onboard are evident as the deck fills up with fish. At 10:01–11:18, the ship stops off the coast of Central America, meeting a sister ship. As fishing resumes, a man hooks a tuna too large for one pole. Some fish require brute strength to bring in, and teamwork becomes vital. The men adapt quickly to changing conditions and fish size. In 11:18: a storm hits, making fishing dangerous. Huge waves crash over the dec. It’s risky work, yet the men remain focused and determined. Between 13:32: Despite rough seas, morale is high and teamwork flawless. Fish pour over the rail. 15:15: 300 tons of tuna are on board. The boats head back to port. 16:29: Fish are weighed and sent into holding tanks, where they’re slowly thawed under continuous fresh water. 17:22: Tuna are washed, cleaned, and cooked at 218°F for several hours. Light and dark meat are separated, with the prized light meat going to cutting machines for portioning before packing. At 18:04: Cans are packed with precision—salt and oil are added, weights are checked, and anything underweight is adjusted. Cans are steamed, cooled, labeled, and prepared for distribution at a high speed. Finally, from 19:15: Hollywood hostesses, including Billy Burke, serve Starkist proudly. The tuna’s journey from ocean to table is one of adventure, precision, and pride. Every can delivers the thrill of the catch in every bite. The French Sardine Company, later known as StarKist, was located in San Pedro, California, specifically in Fish Harbor on Terminal Island. It was founded in 1917 by Martin J. Bogdanovich. Lucille Cornelius, a member of DiEM25’s Coordinating Collective, became politically active at just 14 in apartheid South Africa after meeting two members of the then-banned African National Congress. She has remained politically engaged ever since and now serves on DiEM25’s Coordinating Collective. In this interview from the DiEM25 Academy, Lucille reflects on what decades of organising have taught her about community, strategy and political discipline. Using the analogy of a vehicle, she argues that movements must stop becoming distracted by the “extras” and concentrate on what makes political action possible in the first place: a clear plan, strong structures and people organised from the ground up. For Lucille, community is the most important resource we have. Effective organising means listening to local voices, learning from experienced activists and working from a shared strategy rather than constantly reinventing the wheel. She also explains why DiEM25 matters as a multi-issue movement. Its analysis, policies and democratic structures have been built over years and offer organisers across Europe the tools to turn political ideas into coordinated action. De Spuistraat in Amsterdam is al 20 jaar een stukje levendiger en vrolijker door de aanwezigheid van queerbar PRIK. Met het ruime terras, omringd door een grote hoeveelheid mooie groene planten, en de overheersende kleur roze is PRIK zo'n plek die iedere Amsterdammer wel kent — ook al ben je er misschien nog nooit binnen geweest. Jelger opende de bar in 2006 samen met Gerson, destijds zijn partner. Ze misten een plek waar ze zich écht thuis konden voelen, met goede muziek en lekkere cocktails. Dus begonnen ze die zelf. Alhoewel de liefdesrelatie na een jaar stukliep, hebben de twee de zaak ruim 15 jaar samen gerund voordat Davide het stokje van Gerson overnam. Acteur, tekstschrijver en zanger Wim Hogenkamp won een Edison, de Louis Davidsprijs en schreef de tekst van de Nederlandse songfestivalklassieker De Mallemolen. Maar als je online op zoek gaat naar zijn naam, vind je vooral veel berichten over zijn dood. Hogenkamp werd in 1989 op 42-jarige leeftijd doodgeschoten in zijn eigen huis in Oud-Zuid. Nog altijd is niet duidelijk wie hem vermoordde. Hoewel die mysterieuze moord zeker aan bod komt in de deze maand verschenen biografie over Hogenkamp, gaat het boek vooral over zijn leven. "Voor veel mensen is Wim De Mallemolen en helaas zijn overlijden", vertelt biograaf Marc Didden. Door die dood van Hogenkamp is onderbelicht wat hij tijdens zijn leven bereikte, vindt Didden. En er zijn volgens Didden meer redenen voor zijn relatieve onbekendheid. "Zijn muziek staat niet op Spotify, er zijn eigenlijk ook nooit cd's gemaakt van zijn muziek en daardoor merk je dat hij een beetje weg begint te zakken in het collectieve geheugen. Dat vind ik eigenlijk heel onterecht." Babs Hogenkamp, de zus van Wim, vult aan: "Wat zijn ogen zagen en wat hij bedacht, dat maakte hij ook. Hij zat achter de naaimachine, hij maakte decors en intussen schreef hij de beeldigste teksten. Hij had jaloersmakend veel talent." Meerdere theorieën over zijn dood Vanaf 1987 runde Hogenkamp theaterrestaurant De Suikerhof aan de Prinsengracht. Kort daarna kreeg de biseksuele Hogenkamp te horen dat hij aids had. Het ging steeds slechter met zijn gezondheid, zo was hij aan het eind van zijn leven bijna blind. Maar het was dus niet die ziekte waar hij aan overleed. De moeder van Hogenkamp vond zijn lichaam op 5 februari 1989 in zijn woning aan de Nicolaas Maesstraat in Oud-Zuid. Hij was doodgeschoten. Nog altijd is die moord een groot raadsel. "Ik heb wel een aantal theorieën beschreven in het boek", vertelt Didden. "Maar geen van die theorieën kun je hardmaken. Niemand weet gewoon wie er op die bewuste zondagmiddag naar binnen is gegaan." Bij de zus van Hogenkamp is de hoop dat de moord wordt opgelost bijna veertig jaar na dato nog altijd niet helemaal vervlogen. Asturias and Cantabria are two of the least-known wine regions in Green Spain. In this introduction to northern Spanish wine, I explore their location, Atlantic climate, rainfall, mountains and distinctive weather patterns.
