In the five years since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan following the complete withdrawal of U.S. troops from the country, conditions for women and girls have continued to deteriorate. Under the Taliban's patriarchal restrictions on freedom of movement and expression. Afghanistan is the only country in the world that limits girls' education to primary school. We speak to Afghan American activist Masuda Sultan and humanitarian aid worker Jan Egeland, both of whom have spent time in Afghanistan since the Taliban regained power, about the crisis. Sultan says that the Taliban's edict on women and girls' education has been contested within its ranks, while Egeland notes that aid workers are struggling to even provide primary school instruction to Afghan refugees due to a dire lack of international funding.

Belgen zijn het afgelopen jaar meer gaan beleggen dan dat ze sparen. Dat blijkt uit een studie van ING België, waarover De Standaard bericht. Waar ze tot voor kort beschikbaar geld vooral op spaarrekeningen stalden, is dat nu gekanteld naar beleggingsfondsen, pensioenspaarfondsen en staatsbons. Belgen staan van oudsher bekend als trouwe spaarders, trouwer dan de gemiddelde Europeaan. Maar eigenlijk is dat verschil al zeker 10 jaar verdwenen. Vorig jaar spaarden Belgische gezinnen 12,8 procent van hun beschikbare inkomen - het geld dat ze niet gebruiken voor consumptie - terwijl dat in de rest van de eurozone 14,7 procent was. Bovendien zit het grootste deel van het spaargeld van de Belgen in vastgoed, niet in financiële middelen, zegt Peter Vanden Houte, hoofdeconoom bij ING. "Van het spaargeld van de Belgen gaat nog altijd 70 procent naar wonen: het afbetalen van de eigen woning blijft de grootste post waarvoor we sparen." De 30 procent die overblijft, zijn we de laatste jaren anders gaan plaatsen. "Vroeger was dat vooral op spaarboekjes of bankdeposito's. Maar vanaf 2025 zie je dat Belgen gemiddeld meer geld plaatsen op beleggingsfondsen dan op spaarboekjes." Wanneer je geld op een bankrekening laat staan, compenseert de rente de hoge inflatie niet meer Peter Vanden Houte, hoofdeconoom bij ING Bij ING zien ze, op basis van cijfers van Eurostat, dat in de periode 2015-2024 spaarboekjes nog bijna 2 keer zoveel nieuw spaargeld aantrokken als marktbeleggingen. Sinds 2025 is die verhouding omgekeerd. Belgen storten nu gemiddeld 5,6 miljard euro per kwartaal in beleggingsfondsen, tegenover 3,5 miljard euro op deposito's. Rendement Dat spaargeld tegenwoordig niet veel meer opbrengt, kan een belangrijke verklaring zijn, zegt Vanden Houte. "Sinds de coronapandemie is de interesse voor beleggen sterk toegenomen, vooral bij jongeren. Bovendien zijn de rentevoeten de laatste jaren gezakt, terwijl de inflatie gestegen is. Dus wanneer je geld op een bankrekening laat staan, compenseert de rente de hoge inflatie niet meer." Dat heeft volgens hem mensen over de streep getrokken om toch te durven kijken naar beleggingen. "Die kunnen wel nog een rendement bieden dat boven de inflatie ligt." Vanden Houte citeert uit een eigen onderzoek dat ING heeft laten uitvoeren. "43 procent van de Belgen belegt nu al in Aandelen, obligaties, fondsen of ETF's, wat meer is dan het Europese gemiddelde. Mobiliteitsminister Annick De Ridder (N-VA) moest zich in het Vlaams Parlement verantwoorden voor haar omstreden deal met Egis, de uitbater van de regionale luchthavens van Antwerpen en Oostende. Krijgen de luchthavens nu minder subsidies of niet? Op die vraag kwam ook vandaag geen éénduidig antwoord. Vlaams minister van Mobiliteit Annick De Ridder (N-VA) ontkent dat ze de cijfers over de financiering van de luchthavens van Antwerpen en Oostende anders heeft voorgesteld en houdt vol dat er in de toekomst minder geld naar die Vlaamse luchthavens gaat. Haar uitleg in de commissie Mobiliteit van het Vlaams Parlement kon de oppositie niet overtuigen: ze kreeg felle kritiek, waarbij ook woorden als "leugens" vielen. Maar coalitiepartners Vooruit en CD&V blijven de luchthavendeal schoorvoetend steunen. De deal van Vlaams minister De Ridder met de commerciële uitbater van de luchthavens van Antwerpen en Oostende blijft de gemoederen beroeren. De Ridder houdt vol dat er in de toekomst minder belastinggeld netto naar die luchthaven gaat. "Dat ik de cijfers anders heb voorgesteld, klopt niet", zegt ze. De dading die ze met uitbater Egis heeft afgesloten, blijft ze ook verdedigen. "De Vlaamse regering had de keuze tussen procedures - onzekerheid - en rechtszekerheid." Stop met de mensen blaasjes wijs te maken Vlaams fractieleider Jos D'Haese (PVDA) De oppositie neemt geen genoegen met die uitleg. "Dit dossier rammelt langs alle kanten", vindt Bogdan Vanden Berghe (Groen). "U hebt een nieuwe rekenmethode ontwikkeld voor het parlement, en die klopt niet." De dading met Egis noemt hij in strijd met het Vlaamse luchthavendecreet. "We hebben het hier over een luchthaven (die van Antwerpen, red.) die al jarenlang structureel verlieslatend is, waar er al jarenlang amper iemand vertrekt, waar de enige commerciële aanbieder binnenkort zijn biezen pakt en waar alleen nog commerciële activiteit van privéjets overblijft", schetst Jos D'Haese (PVDA). "U zet alles op alles om die kost wat kost te blijven subsidiëren met belastinggeld." De dading met Egis noemt D'Haese "een groot cadeau van de N-VA aan Egis". "Stop met de mensen blaasjes wijs te maken!" Kijken naar de coalitiepartners "De essentie is dat het absurd is dat de Vlaamse regering in deze tijden miljoenen uitgeeft aan een luchthaven die bedoeld is voor privéjets", vindt Maurits Vande Reyde (onafhankelijk). "Dit is niet meer te verantwoorden." Vande Reyde schuwt de grote woorden niet en heeft het over "leugens, halve waarheden en een ratatouille rond uitspraken" van de minister. U heeft het parlement bewust voorgelogen Vlaams parlementslid Tom Lamont (Vlaams Belang) "Bent u geslepen of is het onkunde?", vraagt Tom Lamont (Vlaams Belang) zich af. Zelf denkt hij het antwoord te kennen: "U heeft het parlement bewust voorgelogen." "Alles wordt vermengd en dan denken dat we ermee wegraken", klaagt Jasper Pillen (Anders) aan. "Lagen Vooruit en CD&V te slapen in de ministerraad of zijn jullie bedrogen?" Coalitiepartners lijken wat ongemakkelijk Tomas Roggeman (N-VA) klaagt "de stemmingmakerij, holle verdachtmakingen, populistische vergelijkingen en publicatieklare oneliners" van de oppositie aan. Dat hij zijn partijgenote De Ridder in bescherming neemt, is niet bepaald verrassend. Veel mensen hebben nog veel vragen Kamerlid Stephanie Vanden Eede (Vooruit) Interessanter zijn de reacties van coalitiepartners Vooruit en CD&V. Blijven zij N-VA-minister De Ridder steunen of niet? In elk geval lijken ze hun handen niet van haar af te trekken, al klinken hun tussenkomsten wat ongemakkelijk. "We zetten een stap naar meer efficiëntie en minder overheidssteun voor de regionale luchthavens", zegt Stephanie Vanden Eede (Vooruit). Al maakt ze ook duidelijk dat er moet worden gewerkt aan een draagvlak voor een alternatief voor de luchthaven van Antwerpen. "Veel mensen hebben nog veel vragen." "Verdient dit alles een schoonheidsprijs? Eerlijk gezegd: nee", geeft Mien Van Olmen (CD&V) toe. "De communicatie en de transparantie konden beter." Volgens haar tonen de uiteenlopende interpretaties van de cijfers aan dat de communicatie beter kon. Tijdens het Republikeinse verkiezingscongres in Dallas heeft president Donald Trump een cheque van 5.000 dollar beloofd aan alle volwassen Amerikanen, áls zijn partij de midterms wint. De vraag is: mag dat zomaar? Critici noemen de belofte een poging tot omkoping, al kan het ook onder het recht op vrije meningsuiting vallen. Het is een opvallende belofte van Donald Trump op een minstens even opvallende conventie in Dallas. De Amerikaanse president gaf weinig uitleg over wat hij nu al het 'Trump Dividend' noemt, ook niet waar hij het geld vandaan zou halen. Er zijn naar schatting tussen de 250 en 270 miljoen Amerikaanse volwassenen die elk 5.000 dollar zouden moeten krijgen. Dat zou neerkomen op een totaalbedrag van ongeveer 1.300 miljard dollar. En dat terwijl de Amerikaanse staatsschuld net boven de 40.000 miljard dollar is geklommen. Als Trump dat bedrag wil uitbetalen, zal hij wel toestemming moeten krijgen van het Amerikaanse Congres. Sommige partijgenoten van Trump hebben hun steun al uitgesproken voor het plan, al is het lang niet zeker dat alle Republikeinen - die slechts een kleine meerderheid hebben in beide kamers - het plan zullen goedkeuren. Omkoping of niet? De Democraten zijn alvast bijzonder kritisch over het plan. Experten voorspellen dat zij het Huis van Afgevaardigden en misschien ook de Senaat opnieuw in handen kunnen krijgen. Daarom geloven ze dat de belofte van de president neerkomt op een poging tot omkoping van de kiezer. De gouverneur van Californië Gavin Newsom schrijft op X dat "Trump uw stem wil kopen met zijn smerig geld". De Amerikaanse kieswet verbiedt politici om kiezers geld of andere voordelen te beloven als ze op hen zouden stemmen. Dat zou inderdaad neerkomen op omkoping en belemmering van een eerlijk kiesproces. Trump belooft echter geen geld om op hem te stemmen. Hij belooft een geldsom van 5.000 dollar áls zijn partij het Congres in handen houdt, na de 'midterm'-verkiezingen dus. Daarom geloven experten dat de uitspraak onder het recht op vrije meningsuiting kan vallen, mocht er toch een klacht tegen de president worden ingediend. Politici maken wel vaker beloftes, zonder die altijd te kunnen inwilligen, klinkt het. Trump is trouwens niet de enige die zo'n belofte heeft gedaan. In 2020 beloofde Andrew Yang als Democratische kandidaat voor het presidentschap dat hij een jaar lang per maand 1.000 dollar zou geven aan 10 Amerikaanse families als hij de verkiezingen zou winnen. En de Democraten Jon Ossoff en Raphael Warnock beloofden in 2021 een bedrag van 2.000 dollar als zij de senatorenverkiezingen in Georgia zouden winnen. Beide mannen wonnen en de bedragen zijn toen ook uitbetaald. Een voorbeeld van wat wel als omkoping zou kunnen worden beschouwd, vinden we bij Elon Musk. Die gaf in 2024 een tijdlang elke dag een cheque van 1 miljoen dollar aan kiezers uit strijdstaten, als ze een petitie rond steun aan de grondwet ondertekenden. Roger Federer, een van de beste tennissers aller tijden, was deze week heel even in Amsterdam. De Zwitser organiseerde gisteren een clinic in het Olympisch Stadion waarbij hij tenniste met kinderen. Ook de kant vergaapten veel bewonderaars zich aan Federer. Of Federer het hier naar zijn zin heeft? "Het is een geweldige stad, leuke mensen. Iedereen is energiek, zelfs met dit slechte weer. Is het echt altijd zo grijs hier?" Federer organiseert dit soort clinics vaker. Sinds hij stopte met tennissen, reisde hij hiervoor al af naar Shanghai, Parijs en New York. "Toen ik nog speelde, wist ik dat het op een gegeven moment op zou houden. Ik dacht na over wat ik nou eigenlijk leuk vond. Voor muziek, kunst, eten en reizen heb ik altijd een passie gehad. En dat wilde ik combineren met het tennissen met kinderen; ze begeleiden, inspireren en motiveren. Dat is echt heel leuk om te doen." Reizen deed Federer tijdens zijn carrière genoeg, maar veel tijd om iets van de steden te zien waar hij kwam, had hij eigenlijk nooit. Bijna altijd moest er gepresteerd worden. Iets wat trouwens aardig lukte, want met twintig gewonnen Grand Slams en een recordaantal Wimbledon-zeges geldt Federer als een van de beste en succesvolste tennissers aller tijden. "Als we ergens kwamen, wilde ik er altijd voor zorgen dat ik er iets zou doen met mijn vrouw en kinderen. Eerst theaters en musea. En toen we kinderen kregen, gingen we ook naar speeltuinen en dierentuinen. Ik wilde voorkomen dat ik alleen kleedkamers en hotelkamers zou zien en roomservice zou moeten bellen. Dat is echt een saai leven." Op deze trip naar Amsterdam stond er daarom onder meer fietstochtje op het programma. "Ik kan me herinneren dat ik hier vroeger ook iets van heb gezien, maar nu kon ik voor het eerst ook de vibe van de stad voelen. Fietsend krijg je daar een beter gevoel voor. Veel beter dan wanneer je hier naartoe vliegt, een chauffeur hebt die je overal naartoe rijdt en dan weer weggaat." "En die fietscultuur hier. Echt geweldig hoe jullie je voortbewegen. En het werkt ook nog. Het deed me denken aan mijn jeugd, toen ik door heel Basel fietste als ik bijvoorbeeld tennistraining had." Tijdens de clinic is Federer ongeveer anderhalf uur met tientallen kinderen in de weer. Allemaal krijgen ze de kans om een balletje met de tennisgrootheid te slaan. Natuurlijk is de clinic ook een commerciële uiting. Het logo van Federers belangrijkste sponsor, die dit project mede organiseert, is in het stadion haast niet te missen. Niet dat de kinderen en de volwassen toeschouwers daar veel oog voor hebben, die zijn allemaal op hun tennisidool gericht. Een van die bewonderaars is oud-tennisser John van Lottum, die in een inmiddels ver verleden vier keer tegen Federer speelde. Wanneer Federer Van Lottum langs de zijlijn ziet staan, rent hij naar hem toe voor een korte omhelzing. "Is hij hier nog? Ik wil hem eigenlijk nog wel even spreken zo", zegt Federer na afloop, vlak voordat hij gaat zitten voor een interview. "Ik heb hem echt jaren niet meer gezien." "Ik was blij verrast hem hier te zien", zegt Federer even later als de camera eenmaal loopt. "Ik denk dat het wel 10 of 15 jaar geleden is. Vroeger trainden we veel samen. Ik heb ook een paar wedstrijden tegen hem gespeeld." Aan die wedstrijden zelf bewaart Van Lottum geen goede herinneringen. "Het was echt een nachtmerrie", zegt hij met een blik die verraadt dat hij er soms nog flashbacks van langs ziet komen. Vier keer stond hij tegenover Federer. Elke keer verloor hij. "Ik voelde me zo verloren en kwetsbaar. Ik heb ook tegen andere toppers gespeeld. Zoals Sampras en Nadal. Bij die spelers had ik altijd wel hoop dat ik ze op een goede dag kon ontregelen. Maar tegen Federer had ik echt geen openingen. Hij liet al mijn wapens wegvallen. Dan voelde ik me echt verloren op de tennisbaan, echt heel klein. Tegelijkertijd is Van Lottum ook groot bewonderaar van de speelstijl van Federer. "Zelfs als je nu kijkt hoe hij slaat. Het is echt een soort van kunst. Als je ziet hoe losjes hij zijn racket vasthoudt. Je hebt de hele tijd het idee dat hij 'm uit zijn handen laat vallen." Het ziet er makkelijk uit, en voor hem is dat ook zo, maar het is ook het resultaat van keihard werken. En ook op mentaal gebied: niet iedere dag ging het vanzelf bij hem. Op de achtergrond kon hij best wel worstelen, maar dat was bij niemand zichtbaar. At least half are estimated to be civilians. An additional 3.8 million deaths can be attributed to the indirect effects of war, including injuries, famine and long-term health conditions. And the wars have also increased the U.S. debt, military footprint, greenhouse gas emissions, destruction and destabilization abroad and unchecked executive power at home. At the same time, conditions for women and girls in Afghanistan continue to deteriorate, as basic rights to education, freedom of movement and access to services are increasingly curtailed under the Taliban's authoritarian rule. "It's a crisis for humanity," says Jan Egeland, secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council, speaking to Democracy Now! from Kabul. "We're so overstretched and underfunded. … We're too alone on the ground here in Afghanistan," explains Egeland, one of the few international aid workers continuing to support displaced people in the country. "The reason we have to lay off female aid workers, female teachers, teaching primary school girls, is because of lack of funding. It's not because of the Taliban." Despite the outsized role it played in destabilizing the country, there has been "zero funding" this year from the U.S. to humanitarian organizations operating in Afghanistan. "Don't forget your promises when you went for the door abruptly five years ago," Egeland says, addressing the United States and other, largely European, countries that made up the U.S.-led NATO coalition in Afghanistan. Energiegigant RWE verstookt jaarlijks ruim een miljoen ton houtige biomassa in elektriciteitscentrales. Het bedrijf krijgt tot 2,5 miljard euro subsidie om kolen te vervangen door biomassa. Omdat er in Nederland te weinig houtresten beschikbaar zijn, importeert RWE jaarlijks vele honderdduizenden tonnen biomassa uit verschillende landen, waaronder Maleisië. Volgens RWE bestaat de biomassa uit houtresten zoals zaagsel en snoeihout. Het bedrijf stelt dat alle biomassa gecertificeerd en daarmee duurzaam is. Maar waar komt de Maleisische biomassa vandaan? Zembla onderzoekt de herkomst van de houtpellets en de gevolgen van de Nederlandse vraag naar hout. Zembla traceert in Maleisië een van de leveranciers van RWE: pelletfabrikant Rainbow Pellet. Daar blijkt dat ook hele bomen worden verwerkt tot biomassa voor de Nederlandse markt. Volgens Rainbow Pellet gaat het om rubberbomen die aan het einde van hun levensduur zijn. RWE bevestigt dat er sinds dit jaar hele bomen worden gebruikt en stelt dat dit door nieuwe Europese regelgeving is toegestaan. Uit onderzoek van Zembla blijkt daarnaast dat Rainbow Pellet hout koopt van een bosbouwer die de afgelopen jaren op minstens vier locaties oerwoud heeft kaalgekapt en vervangen door plantages. De bosbouwer bevestigt dat hij al vijf jaar hout levert aan Rainbow Pellet. Daarmee is er een verband tussen ontbossing in Maleisië en de pelletfabriek die biomassa levert aan Nederland. Voor biomassa gelden strenge duurzaamheidsregels. Zo mag hout niet afkomstig zijn van land dat na 2008 is ontbost. Maar voor biomassa die als reststroom wordt aangemerkt, gelden andere regels. Dan wordt de zagerij waar de houtresten ontstaan als herkomst gezien en niet het bos waar het hout vandaan komt. Hoogleraar milieucriminaliteit Daan van Uhm noemt dit systeem fraudegevoelig. Ook doet de politie onderzoek naar ‘eventuele misstanden en strafbare feiten’ bij de import van houten biomassa uit Maleisië door RWE. Margo Verbaarschot van het landelijk politieteam milieucriminaliteit zegt tegen Zembla dat er ‘sterke aanwijzingen zijn dat de administratie van RWE niet op orde is’. De Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (NVWA) heeft RWE een voorlopige boete opgelegd omdat het bedrijf niet kan aantonen dat de geïmporteerde biomassa uit legaal hout bestaat. Het Openbaar Ministerie moet nog besluiten of het tot strafvervolging overgaat. RWE zegt dat alle grondstoffen die het bedrijf inkoopt voldoen aan de geldende eisen voor legaliteit, duurzaamheid en broeikasgasreductie en dat dit wordt gecontroleerd door een onafhankelijke geaccrediteerde certificeerder. Het bedrijf zegt niet op de hoogte te zijn van het lopende politieonderzoek en verwijst voor vragen over ontbossing naar Rainbow Pellet. Bush addressed the nation, making the case for war against al-Qaeda, whose leader, Osama bin Laden, was based in Afghanistan. "I sensed that something like this was not going to go unpunished," Afghan American New Yorker and women's rights activist Masuda Sultan told _Democracy Now!_ at the time. Within a few weeks, the U.S. invasion began. Sultan would lose 19 members of her family when the U.S. military bombed their village outside of Kandahar. We revisit our coverage of the initial U.S. invasion, including our first interviews with Sultan in 2002, and speak to Sultan again today. She reflects on her experience, including working with Rita Lasar, the sister of a 9/11 victim, to advocate for acknowledgment and compensation for the families of Afghan civilians killed by the U.S. military. The United States war in Afghanistan lasted for nearly 20 years, the longest-ever active conflict in U.S. history. Now as the Taliban government — overthrown by the U.S. in 2001 and later reestablished following the end of U.S. military occupation in 2021 — tightens its patriarchal restrictions on women in Afghanistan, Sultan warns international actors not to "repeat the [mistakes of the] 1990s, of turning our backs on the country. Met zijn twee markante torens is 'ie moeilijk te missen: de Fatih Moskee aan de Rozengracht. Wat ooit werd gebouwd als katholieke kerk, waarna het dienstdeed als tapijthal en muziekwinkel (wat het pand niet ten goede kwam), werd in 1982 gekocht door de Turkse gemeenschap, die het met veel liefde restaureerde en renoveerde. Al meer dan twintig jaar verwelkomt rondleider Mehmet hier met open armen allerlei nieuwsgierige voorbijgangers. Hoewel een heftig herseninfarct vorig jaar zijn strottenhoofd deels heeft verlamd, vertelt hij nog altijd met onverminderde passie over 'zijn' moskee, waar volgens hem iedereen welkom is. Meer zien? De Fatih Moskee, elke Amsterdammer kent het gebouw wel van de buitenkant: de markante torens aan de Rozengracht die hoog boven de Jordaan uitsteken. Toch lopen de meesten er voorbij zonder te weten wat er achter de gevel schuilgaat. Zoals ‘t uiterlijk verklapt werd het ooit gebouwd als katholieke kerk, waarna het onder andere dienstdeed als tapijthal en muziekwinkel – wat ‘t gebouw niet ten goede kwam. Tot in 1982 de Turkse gemeenschap de kerk kocht en volledig renoveerde. Het werd de Fatih Moskee. Al meer dan twintig jaar verwelkomt rondleider Mehmet hier met open armen allerlei nieuwsgierige voorbijgangers. Hoewel een heftig herseninfarct vorig jaar zijn strottenhoofd deels heeft verlamd, vertelt hij nog altijd met onverminderde passie over 'zijn' moskee, waar volgens hem iedereen welkom is. En Mehmet heeft gelijk, want dat de deuren hier ook echt voor iedereen openstaan, blijkt al gauw bij binnenkomst: in de entree ligt informatie in bijna elke taal die je maar kunt bedenken. Zo kunnen ook internationale bezoekers hier meteen zelfstandig hun weg vinden. Wie daarna doorloopt, wordt verrast door het vrolijke gekwetter van een kleurrijk gezelschap losvliegende parkieten, die hier een beetje ‘per toeval’ zijn gekomen. Buurtbewoners die op vakantie gingen en hun parkiet niet mee konden nemen, brachten het beestje hierheen. Ze werden alleen nooit meer opgehaald en dit kwam in de loop der jaren steeds meer voor. Hoewel hun komst toevallig was, passen de parkieten volgens Mehmet perfect bij waar hij en zijn geloof voor staan. Zo dient de ingang van de moskee volgens hem een weerspiegeling van de hemel te zijn. “En daar hoort natuurlijk altijd natuur bij”, legt hij uit. Benieuwd naar de Fatih Moskee? Zoals Mehmet zegt, mag je altijd gewoon even binnenlopen.
