Subscribe to Nuclear Vault http://bit.ly/SubscribeNuclearVault GNOME Project by U.S. Atomic Energy Commission Project Gnome was the first nuclear experiment conducted under the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), predecessor to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Plowshare Program. The Plowshare Program focused on developing nuclear devices exclusively for peaceful purposes. The intent of the Gnome experiment was to evaluate the effects of a nuclear detonation in a salt medium. Historically, Project Gnome consisted of a single detonation of a nuclear device on December 10, 1961 with the Salado Formation. Since the Gnome detonation, the AEC/DOE has conducted surface restoration, site reconnaissance, and decontamination and decommissioning activities at the site. In addition, annual groundwater sampling is performed under a long-term hydrological monitoring program begun in 1972. Coach, an experiment to be located near the Gnome project, was initially scheduled for 1963. Although construction and rehabilitation were completed for Coach, the experiment was canceled and never executed. Known collectively as Project Gnome-Coach, the site is located approximately 25 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, in Eddy County, and is comprised of nearly 680 acres, of which approximately 60 acres are disturbed from the combined AEC/DOE operations. What can an architect bring to the design of a bridge? In 2012, the City of Los Angeles held a design competition to redesign its 6th Street Viaduct. The original, iconic bridge, which served as the backdrop for dozens of TV shows and films, had deteriorated beyond repair. The winning team included Michael Maltzan Architecture, who helped conceive and design a bridge that does way more than just connect traffic across the LA River. It’s an icon, a place to observe the city, and a neighborhood amenity that provides shade and multiple connection points for bikes and pedestrians. It does all this in addition to being an elegant solution to the complex structural forces at play with a large infrastructural project in an earthquake-prone area. Velen vertrekken vanuit Noord-Afrika richting Europese landen, maar niet iedereen overleeft de reis. Langs de kust van Zarzis in Tunesië spoelen ieder jaar de lichamen aan van verdronken migranten. Honderden vluchtelingen zijn daar de afgelopen jaren aangespoeld nadat boten kapseisden tijdens de overtocht naar Europa. Zembla onderzoekt in Tunesië de gevolgen van Fort Europa en volgt antropoloog en expert forensisch onderzoek Amade M’charek en de vissers van Zarzis in hun poging om de anonieme vluchtelingen een naam te geven. “Onze menswaardigheid staat op het spel. We mogen niet wegkijken,” zegt M’charek terwijl ze op het strand foto’s maakt van een scheepswrak en kledingstukken van omgekomen vluchtelingen. M’charek woont sinds haar elfde in Nederland, maar is geboren en opgegroeid in deze streek van Tunesië. Ze helpt en ondersteunt de vissers van Zarzis die zich bekommeren om de lichamen die zij vinden op zee en langs de kust. Omdat de autoriteiten de overleden vluchtelingen niet willen begraven, hebben vissers een eigen begraafplaats aangelegd waar de doden een anoniem maar zorgvuldig graf krijgen. I described how I used a PID controller with an extra observation controller to make it balance, so check out the previous video for more info on that. A reaction wheel moves a mass in either direction at a varying velocity, in order to balance a device at a set angle which is measured by an inertial measurement unit. The reaction wheel can only exert a force when it accelerates or decelerates, so if we try to balance off centre then the wheel would have to constantly increase in velocity until it reaches its limit, at which point the device can no longer balance. I built a device with one reaction wheel which balances in only one axis. However, some devices use multiple reaction wheels to balance in multiple axes. I’ve also built a number of robots that balance using Control Moment Gyroscopes. These are distinctly different because they use a constantly spinning constant velocity mass, which is actively rotated in a control axis. This exerts a force in a perpendicular axis which allows the device to balance. This effect is called gyroscopic precession and I also talked about this in lots of previous videos. Although a reaction wheel and a gyroscope can both exert a controlled force in a set direction, they do this in quite different ways. However, the reaction wheel spins sometimes so it will also have some gyroscopic precession effect if it is rotated while it is spinning, and this may cause some unwanted effects. As well as my previous one-wheel gyroscope balancing robot, I also built another balancing robot with one two-axis actively driven omni-wheel which you can check out in my channel. So in this video, I’m going to attempt yet another one wheel balancing robot using at least one reaction wheel. The 3-kiloton GNOME test was detonated 1200 feet underground in a salt bed formation on December 10, 1961, near Carlsbad, New Mexico. There were 48 subsurface experiments involved, making GNOME the most heavily instrumented seismic nuclear test in history. This testing provided valuable data for both the Plowshare and Vela Uniform Programs. GNOME was the first nuclear test in the Plowshare Program. The Plowshare Program objectives were to determine how energy produced from nuclear explosions could be used for peaceful or civilian purposes. The Vela Uniform Program studied seismic detection, identification, and location of nuclear explosions. Studies were conducted underground with ground-based instruments for detecting explosions in outer space and with established satellite-based instruments for detecting explosions in outer space. Although GNOME was a Plowshare test, the Vela Uniform objective was to determine how the signals and effects of a 3-kiloton device detonated underground in salt beds differed from the outputs of detonations of different yields in other geologic formations such as tuff and granite. Scientists also wanted to compare the seismic signals from underground tests with that of earthquakes. This video contains footage different from that shown in video number 0800028, and includes an introduction by Dr. Edward Teller, one of the few times he was captured on film. Several longrange and close-up views of surface effects from the detonation are shown as well as people reentering the detonation cavity approximately 6 months after the test when the underground cavity was opened to both official observers and members of the press. However for the engine to operate properly it must operate at the correct air fuel ratio. This means that when adding forced induction and increasing the amount of air going into the engine we must also increase the amount of fuel coming into the engine. In my example I'm turbocharging a Toyota 4AFE engine which is naturally aspirated in stock form and makes 110 horsepower. My goal is to try and increase the output to 300 horsepower by adding a turbocharger. In stock form my engine is equipped with 200 cubic centimetres per minute fuel injectors And my car is equipped with a fuel pump that flows 80 liters of fuel per hour. So our fuel pump is capable of flowing more fuel than the engine will realistically ever need. This done to ensure that the fuel pump lasts a long time and isn't strained to maximum capability and it also ensures that correct fuel pressure can be maintained even as the fuel pump ages and wears. Now let's talk about upgrades. Since I'm planning to almost triple my horsepower output I will also be pretty much tripling the amount of air coming into the engine which means that I will also need to triple the amount of fuel delivered to the engine. So a rough estimate tells us that for 300 horsepower I would need injectors that can flow around 600 cc of fuel per minute. Now if we multiply our injector flow rate by 4 which is the number of injectors we get a result of 2400cc per minute. This is the maximum amount of fuel my injectors can flow and also the maximum amount of fuel they require. If we convert cc per minute to liters per hour we will see that this is 144 liters per hour which is well beyond the maximum amount of fuel my stock fuel pump can supply, which means that the fuel pump must also be replaced. I have chosen to replace my stock fuel pump with an AEM High Flow In-Tank Fuel Pump. I chose this pump because it's very compact and has the same inlet and outlet orientation as my stock pump so it will fit inside the same enclosure and bracket without modification. It's also compatible with ethanol and methanol based fuels in case I decide to run these in the future. This fuel pump flows 340 liters per hour which is more than twice what my injectors will ever need so you might think this pump is overkill? Well not as much as you'd think and that's because this is a forced induction application. I'm trying to push a 1.6 liter 4 cylinder engine to 300 horsepower and to achieve that I will realistically need at least 20psi of boost. This means that when the fuel injector opens and tries to spray fuel out into the intake port it will be facing 20 psi of boost pressure fighting against it. So if our fuel pressure is let's say 40 psi then the injector will essentially „waste“ 20 psi of fuel pressure just to overcome boost pressure and the result is that the injector actually discharges fuel with only 20psi behind it. So how do we fix this? With a boost referenced adjustable fuel pressure regulator. A hose from your intake is connected to the fuel pressure regulator which then „senses“ boost pressure. The regulator has a 1:1 Boost dependent rising fuel pressure rate meaning that it will increase the fuel pressure by the amount of boost pressure it senses. So if it senses 20 psi of boost pressure it will also increase fuel pressure by 20 psi. By doing this we prevent boost pressure from reducing the discharge pressure at the injectors and distorting our air fuel ratio. But this also means that when our turbo generates 20 psi of boost pressure, our fuel pressure will ramp up from 40 to 60 psi. And the higher the fuel pressure the more difficult it becomes for the fuel pump to maintain the same flow rate. The fuel pump itself does not produce pressure, it produces flow and the pressure level is a consequence of what your fuel pressure regulator does as well as the diameter of your fuel lines, fuel filter and other secondary factors that contribute to fuel pressure.
