This whole project is open source, and the CAD and code are already published on Github. All of the mechanical parts are designed to be printed in PLA, and the main motor drives, of which there are twelve, are cycloidal drives which I developed over a few videos last year, each drive has two cycloidal discs and a lot of bearings. There are three videos in my channel about building the project already which you can check out, but in this video, I’m going to make some minor mechanical changes, and attempt to make it walk more dynamically. The main mechanical change I’m making is to the lower legs. I talked about the inverse kinematics in part 3 of the series. This involves being able to position the foot in XYZ cartesian coordinates, and work back the maths to calculate each of the three resulting joint angles per leg to achieve the required foot position. To move the foot on a path we interpolate between the positions from point A to point B which means we basically scroll through all the positions on the way, so the foot moves in a straight line. At the moment, the dog is walking by moving the feet to fixed positions on hard coded timers. The time it has to take a step gets longer as the step distance increases, but it has no sense of balance. An interesting quirk of Warren Buffett’s recently announced takeover of Alleghany is that Berkshire Hathaway will pay Alleghany shareholders exactly $848.02 per share, after initially offering $850. The reason for the $1.98 per share deduction? Well, Buffett, didn't want to pay the investment banking fees that are routinely included in mergers and acquisitions. In 2015, Buffett wrote that investment bankers are “mouths with expensive tastes” that “clamor to be fed,” adding “Money-shufflers don’t come cheap.” There are other fees included in the deal price, such as the Lawyers that Alleghany hired to represent them, and Warren didn’t feel the need to exclude those fees from the deal price. The Fulton Surface-to-Air Recovery System or STARS - better known as 'Skyhook' - was developed by the U.S. Armed Forces in the late 1950s for recovering downed aircrew and secret agents from enemy territory. The system consisted of a harness connected to a balloon-suspended recovery line, which was snatched midair by a specially-modified aircraft. The recovered airman could then be winched aboard. Though STARS was only used once operationally in 1962 and retired from service in 1996, it has appeared in numerous works of popular culture, most notably the films 'Thunderball' and 'The Dark Knight.' Using less energy is our only real option to slow climate change. So most of us have heard only one message throughout our lives: “Conserve energy. Because terrible things will happen if we don’t.” That’s true. But I now think of it as “the stick” of climate communication - the way to get people to care about climate change based on fear and desperation. I think it’s time to talk about “the carrot” - the way to get people to work toward clean energy based on hope and audacious ambition. This video explains why, with help from my former colleague at Vox, Matt Yglesias. As renewable energy continues to get cheaper, as more and more clean energy technologies become more viable, we have an opportunity to look ahead toward a better future.
