The film uses a live dog in a laboratory in a re-creation of the famous experiments of Russian scientist Ivan Pavlov; the experiments explore the concept of reflexes, focusing on the salivary reflex in dogs Reflexes are automatic responses we are born with, and by studying them in animals, we can gain insights into human behavior. Pavlov’s experiment demonstrated how a neutral stimulus, like the sound of a metronome, could become a trigger for salivation after being repeatedly paired with food—a process known as conditioned reflex. Using a model of a dog’s head and a device to measure saliva, the experiment showed that with enough repetition, the dog began to salivate at the metronome sound alone. Further trials revealed that the conditioned response became more specific to the exact tempo of the metronome used during conditioning. The experiment also explored extinction, showing that the conditioned reflex gradually disappeared when the metronome was no longer followed by food. Ultimately, the film illustrates how conditioning helps explain not only animal behavior but also how humans learn and adapt through similar mechanisms. 00:00 Explaining that salivation at the first bite of food is an automatic reaction known as a reflex, something humans are born with and share with many animals. This makes animals useful subjects for studying our own reflexes. One famous example is the salivary reflex in dogs, studied by Russian scientist Ivan Pavlov. 1:13: To recreate Pavlov’s experiments, a model dog’s head is used to demonstrate how saliva is produced. The salivary glands, particularly one near the dog’s right ear, are examined. A surgical procedure is simulated in which a duct is rerouted to allow saliva to exit the mouth visibly, enabling measurement without affecting normal digestion. 2:43: To measure the saliva more precisely, a simple device is attached to count drops. Adhesive holds the device in place, allowing for data collection as in Pavlov’s experiments. 3:13: With the setup complete, a baseline is established: the dog salivates when food is presented. Then, a metronome—an unrelated stimulus—is introduced just before the food. At first, the dog only salivates when eating, but after several trials pairing the metronome with food, the dog begins to salivate at the sound alone. 4:46:This demonstrates Pavlov’s concept of a conditioned reflex, where a previously neutral stimulus (the metronome) elicits a response (salivation) after repeated associations with food. 5:08:The tempo of the metronome is then altered to test whether the response is specific to the original tempo. The dog salivates less at new tempos, and over time, only responds at a narrow range near the original tempo. This shows the reflex becomes finely tuned to the specific conditions of the original conditioning. 6:35:The experiment next explores extinction, or whether the conditioned reflex can be eliminated. Using the original tempo but no food, the response gradually declines. After several hours and repeated trials, the dog stops salivating altogether. Although a slight return of the reflex is seen the next day, further trials eventually lead to the complete disappearance of the response. 7:49: Concludes by stating that such controlled lab experiments help explain animal behavior and can also shed light on human behavior, since humans share reflexes. At least 121 schoolchildren were killed along with 26 teachers. Forensic Architecture and Sky News analyzed the attack, finding that the neighborhood was bombed a second time while families and rescuers were still on the ground. The Trump administration has repeatedly refused to take responsibility for the school strike, with President Trump even suggesting that images of the destruction were AI-generated. "There were images and videos available from the time of the strikes," says Samaneh Moafi, assistant director of research at Forensic Architecture. "A second wave of strikes hit, and it's in these ones that we do see the profile of a Tomahawk. "Andrew Tate has become a really important political force for the MAGA movement," explains Heidi Blake, a reporter for The New Yorker. Despite the Tate brothers' popularity with prominent figures in the U.S. right wing, including Tucker Carlson and Elon Musk, Blake says the fact that the extradition request has been greenlit by the State Department suggests the Trump administration won't be protecting the Tates. Vrijheid, eigenheid en acceptatie. Daar draait het om in de wereld van ballroom. Het zijn spectaculaire optredens met uitdagende outfits, maar de dansers vormen samen een zeer hechte gemeenschap. Wat er allemaal schuilt achter de queersubcultuur kun je bekijken in een nieuwe tentoonstelling in Zuidoost laat dat verhaal zien. De expositie toont het werk van vier ballroom kunstenaars en makers. Volgens Khareem Bodega is dat hard nodig. "We worden vaak gezien vanuit de entertainmentkant, maar we zijn ook kunstenaars en mensen die toonaangevend zijn." Naast kunst is er in de tentoonstelling ook aandacht voor de zogenoemde houses. Dat zijn alternatieve families die fungeren als veilige havens en bieden onderdak, steun en mentorschap aan queer personen die vaak door hun eigen biologische familie zijn verstoten "Queer personen werden op straat gezet en vonden elkaar. Mensen die al langer meeliepen in de queer scene leerden jongeren hoe ze moesten overleven, namen hen in huis en tijdens de balls namen ze het tegen elkaar op", vertelt Bodega. Zelf is Bodega 'house father' en begeleidt hij jonge queer personen. Hoewel het volgens hem minder vaak voorkomt dat jongeren vanwege hun identiteit uit huis worden gezet, ziet hij dat de houses nog altijd belangrijk zijn. "Zelfs als je moeder het beste met je voor heeft, is er toch een bepaald begrip die je alleen vindt bij iemand die dezelfde ervaring deelt." Voor Bodega vormt de kern van ballroom, authenticiteit, expressie, activisme, protest, intersectionaliteit, zwart van kleur zijn en queer. "Zelfexpressie wordt in deze maatschappij niet altijd gewaardeerd. Wees vooral jezelf, that's gonna make you a legend eventually." Lemon curd 🍋 Ingredients - 2 eggs - 2 egg yolks - 80g (2.8 oz) unsalted butter - 160g (5.6 oz) sugar - Juice and zest of 2 lemons Directions 1. Start by adding the eggs and egg yolks to a saucepan and whisk until well combined. 2. Add the butter, sugar, lemon juice, and zest into the pot with the eggs, placing it over medium heat. 3. Stir the mixture constantly. Continue to cook until the butter melts and the sauce starts to thicken, becoming glossy and smooth. 4. Transfer the curd into clean glass jars, allowing it to cool to room temperature before securing the lids. 5. Once cooled and the lids are on, the lemon curd can be stored in the fridge, where it will last for up to a month.

Hera United is weer begonnen met trainen. De eerste profclub voor vrouwen bereidt zich voor op een seizoen op het tweede niveau, na de degradatie van vorig seizoen uit de Eredivisie. Drie vrouwen in blauwe voetbaltenues rennen over een groen voetbalveld, met op de achtergrond een hek met diverse borden en bomen. Linksonder is het ATS-logo te zien. Bij de oprichting van de eerste vrouwelijke profclub van Nederland waren de ambities torenhoog. Binnen een paar jaar meedoen op het hoogste niveau, misschien zelfs wel spelen in de Champions League. Het eerste seizoen betekende een behoorlijke schep zand in de motor. Hera United degradeerde op de laatste speeldag en komt nu dus uit in de Eerste Divisie. Het betekende een leegloop, maar liefst 17 speelsters en stafleden vertrokken bij de club. Maar voor onrust zorgt het niet bij algemeen directeur Susan van Geenen. "Het lijkt net voetbal hè", vertelt ze. "Ieder seizoen vertrekken en komen er speelsters en stafleden. Ik ben iemand die heel erg hecht aan mensen. Dus ik moet ook zeggen dat het soms pijnlijk is. Van sommige speelsters neem je zelf afscheid en sommigen gaan, omdat ze in de Eredivisie willen spelen en dat begrijp ik." Het zorgt voor een extra uitdaging dus, de degradatie. Hoewel er ook rust is. De club heeft een thuis op Sportpark Goed Genoeg van AFC, er zijn nieuwe speelsters én een nieuwe trainer aangetrokken. De 32-jarige Juryan Zandvliet, die werkte in de jeugdopleiding van PEC Zwolle en AZ en hij was recent assistent van Alfred Schreuder bij Diriyah SC in Saudi-Arabië. Hij ziet Hera als een leerzame kans. "De uitdaging zit hem erin dat ik nooit met vrouwen heb gewerkt in deze hoedanigheid", legt hij uit. "Dus ik denk dat dat iets is wat mij gaat verrijken als mens en als coach." Dat de club ambitieus is, past hem naar eigen zeggen goed. De eerste trainingen zitten erop en hij hoopt een 'fundament voor succes' te kunnen leggen. Of dat ook betekent dat hij moet en zal terugpromoveren naar de Eredivisie geeft hij dan weer niet met zoveel woorden aan. Een persoon die op een voetbalveld staat, houdt een rode AT5-microfoon vast. Op de achtergrond zijn tribunes, vlaggen en een modern gebouw te zien. De persoon draagt een marineblauw shirt met een wit Nike-logo en heeft lichtbruin haar dat naar achteren is Voor Jannette van Belen, die Hera trouw bleef, is dat anders. "We willen altijd gaan voor het hoogst haalbare. We gaan dit seizoen voor promotie vechten. Dan hopen we zo snel mogelijk weer terug te keren waar we thuishoren." Hoe het huidige tweede niveau strookt met de ambities pareert ze nuchter. "Ja, dat willen we nog steeds. Alleen gaat het iets langer duren. Zo kun je het eigenlijk zien." Als dat niet lukt, is er volgens algemeen directeur Van Geenen ook nog geen man overboord. Ze erkent dat er uitdagingen zijn. Onderschatting is er op sportief vlak één van, maar ook zal de zichtbaarheid niet hetzelfde zijn, aangezien het tweede niveau niet live wordt uitgezonden door ESPN. Toch probeert ze het vooral positief te benaderen. "Het maakt ons ook een stuk creatiever en we hebben niet meer alle verplichtingen en beperkingen met ESPN. Dus we kunnen op onze eigen manier de wedstrijden in beeld brengen."
