Let's solve this quantitative aptitude train problem cleverly, in less than 4 seconds. The regular approach requires setting up and solving an infinite series summation and can take up 10 to 15 mins. Here is the problem: A train, moving at 10 km/hr, is at 90 km away from a train station. A bird moving at 30 km/hr starts from the top of the train and keeps flying between the train and the station. If the bird turns instantly, calculate the total distance travelled by the bird before the train reaches the station. This problem was apparently asked to John von Neumann, a mathematician, at a cocktail party. He amazed everyone by providing the answer instantly. This problem looks challenging because the straight forward approach requires us to compute an infinite series. Setting up this series is a bit tedious. It requires us to do a bit of algebra and solve simultaneous equations. However, looked at it from a different perspective, one can solve the problem almost instantly! **Correction** The CCTV Tower is in Beijing, not Shanghai. Fazlur Rahman Khan was a pioneer in the structural engineering of tall buildings. After buildings exceed sixty stories height, gravity loads account for a smaller proportion of structural weight than wind loads. Khan developed the tubed truss tower design which helped stiffen the building without adding significant weight. The tube design had the added consequence of pushing the structure out to the exterior of the building to become part of its architectural expression. However, the acceptance of visible steel trusses was a slow process that parallels the acceptance of engineering infrastructure like bridges as aesthetic productions.
