Het is een soort spookhuis, zo omschrijven voorbijgangers het pand aan de Sarphatistraat dat al jaren te koop staat. Op nummer 66 staren poppen je vanaf de eerste etage aan. Griezelig vindt de een, mysterieus vindt de ander. Voor de fietsers en wandelaars die dagelijks op de Sarphatistraat te vinden zijn, is het ongetwijfeld geen verrassing meer. De uitstraling van het voormalige hotel roept verschillende reacties op. "Het is echt een heel mooi pand, maar ik durf te wedden dat het er spookt", vertelt een vrouw die in de buurt woont. Twee toeristen die passeren zijn ook niet helemaal comfortabel. "Het geeft een beetje een halloweengevoel." Het pand staat te koop voor bijna 6 miljoen euro. Al jaren is het in de aanbieding, eerder nog voor 7 miljoen euro. Wie interesse heeft, krijgt 850 vierkante meter woonoppervlak voor dat bedrag. Het huis was lange tijd een hotel en telt 28 kamers, waarvan 21 slaapkamers en 14 badkamers. Tijd om dure huizen-expert Erik Rezelman, die met ladder onder de arm aankomt, zijn licht op het geheel te laten schijnen. "We mogen niet binnenkijken, maar er staan fantastische foto's op Funda", legt hij uit. "Toen dacht ik: dat haal ik precies met het trappetje en dan kan ik toch even binnenkijken." Wanneer hij even later naar binnen tuurt, beschrijft hij: "Er hangen allemaal sleutels van het hotel nog. Al die kamersleutels." Achter een raam op de tweede verdieping van een oud, verweerd gebouw staan vier etalagepoppen in historische kostuums. In het raam zijn de lucht en een boom te zien. De etalagepoppen kijken vanachter het glas naar buiten. Het huis heeft zelfs een eigen Wikipedia-pagina. Daar valt te lezen dat er vroeger mensen woonden die in de diamanthandel zaten. Voor wie de pagina nog nooit gezien heeft, maar wel langs de woning komt, zijn het toch vooral die poppen die blijven hangen. Voorbijgangers zijn het, indien ze het zouden kunnen kopen, niet eens of ze deze zouden laten staan. "Als ik het had dan zou ik het kopen, dan zou ik het wel licht maken en de poppen wellicht een ander jurkje aandoen", vertelt een vrouw. Een man die langsloopt, geeft aan: "Als ik het koop dan zou het een vereiste van me zijn dat die poppen moeten blijven. Dat hoort bij dit gebouw." Op de vraag of AT5 binnen zou mogen kijken, liet de makelaar weten daar niet aan mee te kunnen werken. Of het aan de poppen ligt dat de woning nog niet verkocht is, blijft dus de vraag. Volgens Rezelman zou het ook met de indeling van de straat te maken kunnen hebben. Op het Museumplein wordt hard gewerkt aan een groot en kleurrijk kunstwerk op het basketbalveld. De schildering van kunstenaar Munir de Vries is gekozen, nadat de buurt erover heeft gestemd, en zit vol met symboliek. "Ik hoop dat mensen er door geïnspireerd raken." Het kunstwerk oogt op het eerste gezicht vooral kleurrijk, maar als je even langer kijkt, zie je dat er verschillende boodschappen in de schildering zijn verwerkt. Zo loopt de tekst 'They tried to bury us, but they didn't know we were seeds' dwars door het werk. Volgens De Vries staat die zin symbool voor veerkracht: "Elk zaadje kan doorbreken. De boodschap is: laat je niet klein krijgen." Koloniale geschiedenis Het kunstwerk verwijst ook naar de koloniale geschiedenis van het Museumplein. In 1883 vond hier de Internationale Koloniale Tentoonstelling plaats, waar mensen uit Nederlandse koloniën werden tentoongesteld. Tegenwoordig besteden de musea rondom het Museumplein aandacht aan dat verleden. De Vries verwerkt die geschiedenis in zijn ontwerp door figuren te tonen die vastzitten binnen kaders, terwijl anderen daar juist uit breken. Het Museumplein staat al jarenlang bekend als een plek in Amsterdam waar grote demonstraties plaatsvinden. "Het Museumplein is natuurlijk een plek van protest en verschillende meningen", vertelt de kunstenaar. Juist daarom vond De Vries het passend om voor dit werk tekst te gebruiken, iets waar hij normaal gesproken weinig mee werkt. Het werk bedekt in totaal de gehele oppervlakte van het basketbalveld, wat zo'n 700 vierkante meter is. Om dat allemaal voor elkaar te krijgen schakelt Munir verschillende hulptroepen in. De Vries krijgt hulp van vrienden, familie, vrijwilligers en zelfs basketballers die normaal gesproken op het veld spelen.Ondanks de nieuwe make-over van het basketveld blijft het veld geschikt om op te basketballen. "De basketballers vonden het heel belangrijk dat ze konden blijven spelen. We hebben research gedaan over wat de beste verf is", vertelt De Vries. Ook basketballers die van plan waren een potje te spelen reageren enthousiast: "Het ziet er best mooi uit. We hebben zin om erop te gaan spelen". Als alles volgens planning verloopt, kan er dit weekend weer worden gespeeld op het vernieuwde basketbalveld.
