So today, I've decided to dissolve some cotton balls in something called Schweizer's reagent. I need to mix concentrated ammonia with copper hydroxide. The solution can dissolve cotton, but it's kind of slow, and it's not like adding sugar to water. For everything to disappear, I just need to mix it for a few minutes. I can gel the cotton back, and to do this, I just have to pour it into some dilute acid. #shorts

If you're a long-time viewer, you'll know that I *really* like random numbers. Today, I'm USING random numbers to generate some distinctly nonrandom maps. I first heard of Monte Carlo simulations in undergraduate computational physics, and have long thought about using it to draw maps with optimized districts. (see "Ising model" for a very similar physics simulation). I wrote a program to draw maps of Gerrymandered (or not) congressional districts in the state of North Carolina. I'm not getting into the methods and politics, I just think gerrymandering is a fascinating problem to solve, and the Monte Carlo simulation is great at it! You program in an initial condition, and your "desired election results", and the program handles the rest, adjusting the map pixel-by-pixel until it aligns to your desired metrics (and either a really GOOD map, or a really BAD map). This video was entirely conceived, directed, shot and edited by my friends Nermin and Iva of @our pirate life (IG: https://www.instagram.com/our_piratelife/?hl=en YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFf9Q-F7HujoGV9bX5Fvfmg) All I did was show up and pretend to be cool. In the past I tried shooting a video like this myself but the results were usually underwhelming. When we shot this video I learned why I failed before. I failed because shooting videos like this is incredibly hard. You have to think of the lights, the time of day, the shadows, camera angels, people and cars passing by and ruining shots, and you need an incredible amount of gear and organisation and the ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances. Shooting these 55 seconds of video took an entire day at a remote location (Blidinje Nature Park) and tons of footage of which obviously only a fraction was used. I finally understand why the credits of full length and feature films have an army of people in them. But I'm happy we shot this little film and immortalized my humble Toyota MR2 in it's current bike carb itb guise. There will be many changes to the AW11 in the future so I'm glad I'll always be able to remember it in this form. Although it does look a lot better in the video than it is in reality :) But memories are there to be idealized anyway. Work aggressively to get everything out of the pan., - Once cool, blend in a blender or food processor to a fine powdery texture. Scaling the recipe: - Weigh your yield (it should be 140g to 150g) - To calculate your butter requirements multiply by .2 to .235% - As I starting point I’d recommend 30g of butter, but substituting 5g of that for dark chocolate - Add 5g (approx 3% of the yield) cocoa powder - Add 1.5g of salt Finishing the recipe: - Melt the butter and chocolate together - Make sure the dirt, cocoa powder and salt are fully mixed - Stir in the melted butter and chocolate to the dry mix and combine throughly - Form in double espresso baskets by filling and tamping - Add a screw indentation if you’d like - Tap out onto a plate, or into a freezer bag - Chill in the fridge for 2 hours - Allow to return to room temperature a little before serving - Enjoy! Arsenic's an element and it's classified as a metalloid, which mean that it has properties, that are between a metal and a non-metal. It can sometimes be found in it's pure form like this, but it's commonly found combined with something else, like iron or sulfur. Arsenic's very poisonous, and historically, it was pretty common to use it to kill people. People usually used arsenic trioxide though, because it was sold as a rat poison, and it was the easiest form to get a hold of. #shorts

Lordstown Motors Insider Trading Scandal. Members of the leadership team at Lordstown Motors appear to have sold large amounts of company stock just before reports of various troubles at the company became public. Five top Lordstown executives—including president Rich Schmidt, now former chief financial officer Julio Rodriguez, and propulsion head Chuan "John" Vo—sold some of their shares worth a total of more than $8 million in early February when the stock was worth around $24 a share. Today, it's worth around $10. Lordstown disclosed in their most recent regulatory filing that they may not have the cash to get their debut pickup truck to market -- and might not last as a company over the next 12 months if they can’t raise more more capital. In winter 2020, the Mdou Moctar band met up in Niamey, the capital of Niger, to record a few songs in anticipation of the release of, Afrique Victime. We were staying on the outskirts of town at a friend's home. One day, we quietly set up in front of the house to film a few songs. Despite our relative isolation, the noise of the band inevitably attracted a crowd. What started as the four of us simply playing a few songs for a camera turned into a three-night run of rowdy concerts, bringing in hundreds of eager listeners. Each night, kids from all over the city would line up at our door, rushing over after their final evening prayer. These performances were completely spontaneous and wholly unplanned. Thanks to our audience, we were able to capture the spectacular energy of a typical Niamey concert for you. We're thrilled about it and hope you will be, too. Enjoy! I previously built an omni-directional robot with ball-shaped wheels. Each wheel had a hemisphere which if free moving. There were some suggestions that these hemispheres could be powered, although we'd have to vary the velocity as the main axel rotates because a small circumference will be touching the ground. We can use this to our advantage however to make a continually variable reduction or continually variable transmission (CVT). Often CVTs use belts running between two pulleys which can change diameter, but in this video we're going to use a ball. However, the nature of waste today is different than half a century ago. The smoke, fumes, and particulate matter that have been observed emanating from these pits contain a heterogeneous variety of materials. Exact exposure levels are not known in veterans, however many of these materials are known to be linked to long term health effects and some have been classified and recognized as carcinogens via retrospective analysis in humans and laboratory experiments. The particulate matter produced from these burn pits can also deposit into the earth and during weather events such as dust storms, can circulate the particles to local inhabitants, potentially causing health effects for them, years later. Recognizing these long term health effects will enable people to not make this mistake again, and to help those who have been exposed. Making music with the geometry of bird flock patterns, using boids algorithm. Using Max we can do things like assign effects: delays, reverbs, etc. to the parameters of swarm simulations. We can also generate melodies with the algorithm as well. From Messiaen transcriptions to computer music, bird inspired music is the music to aim for.
