The 90s and 00s demoscene was filled with incredible sights & sounds for the senses, but none more incredible (in my opinion) than kkrieger; a playable 3D FPS that compacts into just 96KB created by German demo group Farbrausch (theprodukkt). Recently I was invited by a local organization in Vancouver, Canada to give a speech in Chinese (this was an online event due to Covid). There are many foreigners who speaks Chinese and I was honored to share my China story in Mandarin. In my speech I discuss how my China story began, why I went to China, my work experiences in China, life as an expat in China, studying Chinese in China, how I met my wife in China, why I left China, and my current work in Canada, and my future goals with my YouTube Channel. TAT-1 was the world's first transatlantic telephone cable, laid between 1955 and 1956 and inaugurated on September 25, 1956. Operating until 1978, TAT-1 carried over 300,000 calls per year - including traffic from the Washington-Moscow Hotline - and laid the technological groundwork for dozens of cables - both public and private - laid over the following decades.
This week, conservator Verena Kotonski takes a really long look at the Sherborne Cartonnage to assess what state it's in, how it got to be in that condition and what methods she may be able to use to stabilize it without causing any damage to it. Effectively, Verena's job this week is to try to solve a 3D puzzle with no instruction manual. However, never fear! While Verena doesn't have an instruction manual, she does have a hoover. Keep your eyes peeled, things are about to get microscopically detailed. To be honest we have no idea how many episodes this series will have, each month the cartonnage has posed new 'challenges'. But it's also revealed more about life and death in Ancient Egypt. So we hope you will follow along as an already long project gets made even longer by unexpected global hand break turns. The conservation and the making of this film was generously sponsored by the John S Cohen Foundation. #AncientEgypt #Conservation #NewButOld
The world as we know it today will likely end one day. When it does, will we be able to say at least we created the world we wanted? Will it end with all the rich people escaping to Mars? Or can we shape our demise through our common friendship and unity with the living world? In exploration of topics from Srećko Horvat's new book After the Apocalypse, Dušan Pajović and the author discuss the challenges of green capitalism to a radical progressive green agenda and the strategic importance of putting “the commons” at the centre of green politics. Srećko Horvat is a philosopher, author and co-founder of DiEM25. Dušan Pajović is the campaign coordinator of the Green New Deal for Europe - DiEM25's Blueprint for Europe’s Just Transition. There is a saying that ‘all good architecture leaks’. While likely not intended as an endorsement for water damage, this video takes the phrase seriously by playfully sorting through some of architecture’s greatest leaks. Frank Lloyd Wright was famously dismissive of the many unintentional leaks in his buildings, once telling Mr Johnson to move his table if he didn’t like it getting rained on. However, there are a number of great intentional leaks throughout architecture as well, such as the entry hall of Peter Zumthor’s Therme Baths in Vals. The walls allow groundwater to seep in from the surrounding mountain while forming beautiful murals out of mineral deposits the water picked up while on its journey through the earth. Whether leaks are intentional or unintentional, they are an inevitable and important reality for architects. There should always be plans for the water that will get into our buildings and this video offers five humorous strategies for making those plans. __ FOLLOW me on instagram: @stewart_hicks & @designwithco Design With Company: https://designwith.co University of Illinois at Chicago School of Architecture: https://arch.uic.edu/ #architecture #leaks #goodarchitecture
Here's a written summary of the technique: 11g coffee (ground at the finer end of medium, assuming this is light roasted coffee. The darker you go the more you may prefer to increase the dose and coarsen the grind.) 200g water (brought to a boil and used immediately) - Put the filter into the cap. Don't rinse or preheat the brewer (it doesn't make any difference) - Put coffee into the brewer - Place on scales and then add water, aiming to wet all the coffee during pouring - Start a timer, and immediately place the piston piece into the top of the brewer, about 1cm in - Wait 2 minutes - Holding the brewer and the piston, gently swirl the brewer - Wait 30 seconds - Press gently all the way - Drink and enjoy! Get your first 10 PCBs for free at https://www.pcbway.com/ I've been thinking about building a jamming or 'beanbag' gripper for some time. This gripper uses a flexible membrane full of granular material which can form around the item to be picked up. The air is then sucked out of the membrane which cases the grains to be pulled together so that is becomes rigid. This is like a brick of vacuum packed coffee, but in this case I'm using BB pellets. My membrane is made from a squeezy toy and the rest of the assembly is 3D printed. I'm using a Dynamixel servo to pull a 200CC syringe which pulls the air out of the membrane. In this weeks video I wanted to see if canned air had any musical applications. *Cough* Enter Andrew Huang *Cough*... It turns out, to my surprise and delight that there are a few! Join me on my quest to find unusual ways to produce music and beats! Please share this video if you would like to support the channel. Follow me on the Grams and Tikok! @levimcclainmusic Mumbo Jumbo for the Algorithm: Here is a bit of a breakdown on some of my favorite sounds I used to create this track. I was able to make use of the found sounds aesthetic, with the cans foley percussion, wind and air sounds, and even some pen percussion and drumming. Some of the more interesting sound design ideas I incorporated: Using the air duster on the bars of my marimba. Turns out, since the metal tubes of the instrument are tuned to the same 440hz based notes of the keyboard, I could easily blow on them to get a nice thick wind instrument sound. I wonder how different bars from say a xylophone or vibraphone would differ. Gotta love tuned percussion. I used compressed air on my pink telecaster guitar to get a cheap, poor mans version of an ebow sound effect. I would say that its an interesting sound, much like using a violin or cello bow on your guitar but not particularly pragmatic to produce. Still, it's a neat timbre and interesting tone, I might explore this extended technique later if I do a followup to my "Study in Ambience" video. The snare drum sound is actually a post processed sound of me blowing air directly into my Shure SM57 Mic. It ended up clipping pretty hard, which is something you'd normally want to avoid, but I was able to, through copious amounts of EQ, compression, amp simulation, saturation, flex pitch shifting, and cutting get a pretty nice lo-fi snare sound. The last neat unusual percussive technique here is by hitting the can with a pen or stick and then quickly rotating it upside down, the resulting tone will fluctuate in pitch. It sounds very reminiscent of a Flexatone or Fleximetal. It's a pretty cool glissando-like effect that I am fond of. All in all I set out to answer the question, "CAN (no pun intended... well okay, maybe a little..) compressed air music?"... I think it certainly can... If you have like 10 hours to edit it together that is.

We're doing the measurement to see whether the rods abide by generally accepted machining standards and tolerances before installing them into my turbo 4afe engine build. On their website MaXpeedingRods claim that the rods are honed to a 0.0001mm tolerance, unfortunately this is likely a typo as these types of tolerances are pretty much impossible to achieve on a mass produced aftermarket or OEM connecting rod. Instead I'll be using a dial bore gauge to check the rods at multiple point to see whether they have out of round and taper outside of the generally accepted 0.0005 inch or 0.013mm of tolerance. After measuring all of the MaXpeedingRods connecting rods the verdict is that they pass inspection and are within 0.010 of tolerance which is pretty good considering their price point and the fact that they undercut comparable rods in price yet performed no worse when it comes to tolerances (from my experience measuring and seeing a few dozen enthusiast rod options for different engines measured by professional machinists at least).
