Rice Cooker Hotcakes Ingredients - 360g flour - 40g caster sugar - 10g baking powder - 6g bicarbonate of soda - 1 pinch salt - 675ml buttermilk - 220ml milk - 3 large eggs, separated - 75g unsalted butter, melted - Creme fraiche and lemon curd to serve Method In a bowl, add the flour, caster sugar, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, and a pinch salt. Whisk and set aside. In another bowl, add the buttermilk, milk, egg yolks, and the butter melted. Whisk well. Add the egg whites to a third bowl and whisk until you have soft peaks. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Some small lumps are fine you don't want to overmix the batter. Then, fold through the whisked egg whites. Lightly spray the inside of your rice cooker bowl with a neutral-flavoured oil. Ladle in 3 ladles of your batter into the rice cooker. Run your rice cooker through one cook function Carefully turn out the hot cake, top with toppings of choice, I like crumb fresh and lemon curd. (Lemon curd recipe coming tomorrow)

The family also visits the Calico Ghost Town and Los Angeles’s 1962 County Fair. The film starts at Edwards AFB with images of a Douglas DC 6 (:07), pedestrians on the airstrip, a DC-4 (:26), vintage cars in the lot (:43) and unidentified fighter jets running past the San Gabriel Mountains (:46). Paratroopers drop to the ground (2:50-3:13). The Vought F-8 Crusader (3:26) and McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom (3:46) follow. Shot’s over the crowd highlight an early 1960’s style (4:17). F-4’s fly towards the camera (4:41). Another conducts mid-flight refueling (5:34). A series of Sikorsky H-34 helicopters touch down (6:29). In the 1960’s it was working as a traveling demonstration ship for the “Atoms for Peace” project. It concludes as tugboats perform a ceremonial water salute (26:28-27:12). The break-bulk vessel Cape Johnson, originally named M.M. Dant and later Mormacsaga, was constructed for States Steamship Company (commonly known as States Lines) by the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) in San Diego, California in November 1962. It was the fifth of six sister ships; Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in Newport News, Virginia built the first four. M.M. Dant and its sister ship C.E. Dant were named for members of the Dant family of San Francisco who owned States Lines. M. M. Dant began service for States Lines in 1963. Volgens Cory Doctorow is dat de vraag waar het in het AI-debat uiteindelijk om zou moeten draaien. Toch komt die vraag zelden aan bod. De gesprekken gaan vooral over nieuwe modellen, tokenmaxxing en het moment waarop AI ons voorbij zal streven. Volgens Doctorow zijn de miljardeninvesteringen in AI uiteindelijk gebaseerd op één aanname: dat AI werknemers kan vervangen. Dat bedrijven straks voor een fractie van de loonkosten hetzelfde werk kunnen laten uitvoeren. Maar veel signalen wijzen vooralsnog een andere kant op. Door AI gegenereerde rechtbankdocumenten blijken fouten te bevatten, en diverse bedrijven die personeel ontsloegen omdat AI het werk zou overnemen, hebben die keuzes inmiddels teruggedraaid. Maar hoe zit het dan met morgen? Of volgend jaar? Nieuwe modellen volgen elkaar in hoog tempo op en de verhalen erbij gaan over sneller, beter en veelzijdiger. Doctorow ziet dat de sprong naar werkelijk betrouwbare intelligentie minder vanzelfsprekend is dan vaak wordt aangenomen. Sneller woorden voorspellen, of woorden voorspellen op basis van meer trainingsdata, leidt volgens hem niet naar een punt waarop ieders werk door AI wordt gedaan. Bovendien wordt AI steeds vaker getraind op data die eerder door AI is gegenereerd. Het is een vorm van digitale inteelt, met vergelijkbare gevolgen. Voor dat probleem bestaan voorlopig nog geen overtuigende oplossingen. Toch is Doctorow opvallend optimistisch over de lange termijn. Niet over de huidige AI-bubbel – waarvan hij verwacht dat die uiteindelijk zal leeglopen – maar over wat daarna komt. Een wereld waarin enorme hoeveelheden rekenkracht goedkoop beschikbaar zijn en ontwikkelaars die infrastructuur kunnen inzetten voor creatieve en maatschappelijk waardevolle toepassingen. Een beetje zoals na de internetbubbel. Maar dan groter. *Over Cory Doctorow* Cory Doctorow is journalist, activist en schrijver. Bram Vermeulen bezoekt een twintigjarige Libanese fotograaf in het ziekenhuis. Zij overleefde een tweevoudige Israëlische raketaanval en vertelt hoe zij en haar vrouwelijke collega drie uur lang hebben gesmeekt om hulp van het Libanese leger, de Verenigde Naties en hulpverleners. Die kregen van Israël geen toestemming voor een reddingsactie. De tweede raket legde uiteindelijk het gebouw waarin ze schuilden in puin. Haar collega overleefde deze zogenoemde double tap-aanval niet. ‘Dit is een aanval op de waarheid’, zegt de jonge fotograaf.
