Discover the grape varieties of Galicia, including Albariño, Godello, Mencía, Treixadura and the lesser-known native grapes of north-western Spain. In this Galician wine guide, I explore the principal white and red grape varieties found across Rías Baixas, Ribeiro, Valdeorras and Ribeira Sacra. I begin with Albariño, Galicia’s most famous grape, before examining Godello, Mencía and a fascinating collection of indigenous Galician varieties. I look at the origins, growing characteristics and wine styles of Albariño, including its relationship with Alvarinho in Portugal and its historic confusion with Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Albarín Blanco. I also explain how fermentation, lees ageing and oak can influence the style and ageing potential of Albariño wines. Moving beyond Albariño, I examine Treixadura and its importance in Ribeiro, followed by the remarkable revival of Godello in Valdeorras. I discuss why Godello is sometimes compared with white Burgundy and how it can produce complex wines combining citrus fruit, stone fruit, acidity, texture and mineral characteristics. For the red grapes of Galicia, I focus on Mencía and its association with Ribeira Sacra and Bierzo. I explain its relationship with Jaen in Portugal, its ripening characteristics and the different styles it can produce, from light, floral and fruit-driven wines to more concentrated expressions from old vines and steep terraces. Volgens econoom Walther Ploos van Amstel zijn er genoeg manieren waarop de stad het aantrekkelijker kan maken om elektrisch te rijden. Alle Amsterdammers overtuigt hij daarmee nog niet: ''Het lijkt toch een beetje op een speelgoedauto." "I love my car heel veel'', zegt een bestuurder van een benzineauto. ''Dat geluid: errr, errr. Dat doet een elektrische auto gewoon niet." Haar auto mag van de gemeente voorlopig dus nog steeds ronkend de stad in. "Jammer'', zegt een andere vrouw, die haar benzineauto aan het schoonmaken is. "We moeten zuinig zijn op onze natuur''. Volgens bedrijfseconoom Walther Ploos van Amstel zijn er nog steeds mogelijkheden om elektrisch rijden te stimuleren. "Laadpalen neerzetten, korting op parkeertarieven en laad- en losplekken alleen maar toegankelijk maken voor bestelbusjes die elektrisch zijn. Kies meer voor de wortel dan voor de stok." Dat zou volgens hem ook de vele twijfelaars kunnen overtuigen. "De voordelen wegen niet heel erg op tegen de nadelen, en het is best wel prijzig", zegt de poetsende vrouw. ''Het lijkt ook een beetje op een speelgoedauto'', zegt een voorbijganger. Ploos van Amstel verwacht niet dat er alsnog een uitstootvrije zone voor personenauto's komt. Volgens hem zet het kabinet daar niet op in, mede omdat de verwachting is dat vanaf 2035 vrijwel alle nieuw verkochte personenauto's in Europa elektrisch zijn. "Niet voor iedereen is de stap naar elektrisch gemakkelijk", aldus de bedrijfseconoom. Sommige Amsterdammers vinden daarom andere mogelijkheden. Bij een ontvoering zijn gisteravond twee inzittenden van een auto aangehouden vlak bij het Flevoparkbad in Oost. Het gaat om twee 24- en 35-jarige mannen uit Rotterdam. Bij de aanhouding werden ook waarschuwingsschoten gelost. In de auto werd het slachtoffer zonder verwondingen aangetroffen. De ontvoering begon eerder die avond op de Burgemeester Van Leeuwenlaan in Nieuw-West. Na de melding van een mogelijke ontvoering rukte de politie rond 22.00 uur met veel materieel uit. Dat leidde tot een achtervolging die onder meer over de Insulindeweg ging en eindigde bij het Flevoparkbad. Daar werden waarschuwingsschoten gelost, waarna de inzittenden uit de auto komen. Ook de ontvoerde zat in de auto. AT5 ontving rond 22.20 uur tips over tientallen politieauto's die met sirenes door de straten reden. Ook zijn er een politiehelikopter en een drone ingezet boven het gebied. Op beelden is te zien dat de straat deels is afgezet en dat er een auto op de nabijgelegen tramrails staat. Hoe die daar terecht is gekomen, is niet duidelijk. Rond het Flevoparkbad deden de agenten onderzoek, onder meer in de bosjes. Daarbij lijkt ook mogelijk bewijsmateriaal te zijn veiliggesteld. Politieachtervolging door Oud-West Eerder op de avond was er ook een politieachtervolging, door Oud-West. It likely dates to 1963 or 1964. In addition to shots of the Hall of Liberty and the mosaic, the film features shots of the cemetery and its famous mortuary. The Hall of Liberty features statues of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson as well as the Birth of Liberty mosaic. At 162 feet (49 m) long and 28 feet (8.5 m) high, Birth of Liberty is the largest historical mosaic in the United States. It is composed of ten million pieces of Venetian glass and depicts twenty-five scenes from early America, from 1619 to 1787. The "Birth of Liberty" (1961–1965) mosaic was created in Italy by Italian artists under the supervision of art expert Professor Bruno Bearzi and muralist Robert Homer Cumming, and was later supervised by Parker LeGrand Jacobs at Forest Lawn. The mosaic features 25 scenes from American history from Jamestown and the Mayflower to the surrender of General Cornwallis and the first session of the U.S. Congress. It is set into a 9-foot thick wall of concrete adjacent to the Hall of Liberty, a separate structure. Built between 1958-1963, The Court of Liberty was constructed to provide exclusive lawn crypts and private memorial courtyards beneath the gaze of George Washington and other icons of the Revolutionary War. The portion built within the period of significance is composed of the courtyards along the central axis between The Washington Monument and the Birth of Liberty mural. These courtyards are characterized by brick walls that reflect a distinctive bond found at the Court of Remembrance and the Diana Group. The court is divided into four terraces connected by a concrete walkway along the central axis. The last terrace holds The Washington Monument and opens to newer courtyards at each side. A grand staircase on the northern end of the court leads to The Washington Monument. This was designed by Thomas Ball in the mid-19th century and brought the statue to the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. It was eventually installed at the new Court of Liberty in 1958.The statue stands 60 feet high and spans 40 feet square at the marble base. A 15 feet high bronze figure of George Washington is the central feature, dressed in his Continental Army uniform and giving a calming gesture. Below him are four bronze busts of other important officers of the Revolutionary War: the Marquis de Lafayette, Henry Knox, Benjamin Lincoln, and Nathaniel Greene. These busts are set into coves upon pedestals. Sitting at the base of the sculpture are four allegorical figures representing the central themes of the Revolutionary War: Oppression, Revolution, Victory, and Cincinnatus (a legendary hero who fought victoriously for Rome and afterward returned to his farm). The statue also features a bronze eagle with an American flag flying out of the front and back of the base. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
