The Courage Foundation in cooperation with DiEM25 opened the Europe-wide exhibition “We Are Millions”, a massive photo campaign in support of imprisoned WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange, in Leipzig. Find the exhibition online and add your own photo at WeAreMillions.org. On August 7, 2020, the exhibition culminated with a talk by EcoLeaks founder Esteban Servat, a video message from WikiLeaks editor Kristinn Hrafnsson, and performances and video installations to shed light on Assange’s case. The exhibition was hosted by Klaudia Trappkova, DiEM25 Press Officer. Julian Assange has been imprisoned in the high-security HMP Belmarsh in London since April 11, 209, as he faces extradition to the United States, where he has been indicted on 18 counts for obtaining, possessing, conspiring to publish and for publishing classified information. With the first-ever use of the Espionage Act for a publisher, the indictment represents an unprecedented attack on press freedom around the world. For Julian Assange, who could face up to 175 years in prison, a conviction could be a death sentence. Courage campaigns for Assange's defence at defend.WikiLeaks.org
Subscribe to Nuclear Vault http://bit.ly/SubscribeNuclearVault The B-61 thermonuclear bomb, first produced in 1966, has developed into an extremely flexible weapon. Its many different modifications has made it able to fill the multipurpose needs of the military. Major modifications were made to the B-61 in 1966, 1975, 1977, 1979, and 1991. Designed by the Department of Energy’s Los Alamos National Laboratory in northern New Mexico, the lightweight bomb could be delivered by the Air Force, Navy and NATO planes at very high altitudes and at speeds above Mach 2. The 141.6-inch long, 13.3-inch diameter bomb averaged approximately 750 pounds, but actual weight varied with each modification.

It's play button time, and today it's made from copper foil - a surprisingly stretchable material. You wouldn't think that crystalline materials like metals could deform without destroying the atomic pattern that gives them their strength and electronic properties, but with the help of a crystal defect called a dislocation, it's super easy. Dislocations are agents of plastic deformation, traveling through crystals and enabling malleability and ductility in soft metals like copper, making them great raw materials! I hope you enjoy this dive into the materials science of plastic strain, and if this is your first video here, be sure to subscribe for more! Subscribe to Nuclear Vault http://bit.ly/SubscribeNuclearVault Ivy Flats, a 1962 tactical military exercise at the Nevada Test Site, involved the detonation of live nuclear rounds fired from the Davy Crockett artillery piece. The Davy Crockett was developed to give U.S. Army units an effective nuclear capability against potentially larger units of Soviet armored forces. The Davy Crockett, a recoilless launcher, was the third artillery piece deployed, those earlier being a 155 mm piece designed to fire a nuclear round and a 288 mm mobile piece, commonly called an “atomic cannon.” Nuclear-capable ground artillery pieces were gradually replaced by increasingly accurate, nuclear carrying missiles and aircraft. The Ivy Flats video shows an Army exercise that was observed by visiting dignitaries, including U.S. Attorney General Robert Kennedy and General Maxwell Taylor, a Presidential military adviser. Participating in the exercise were members of the 4th Mechanized Infantry Division from Ft. Lewis, Washington. Ivy Flats was a “battle” between a large simulated enemy armored force and a smaller U.S. force consisting of conventional artillery pieces, which couldn’t stop the pending onslaught. U.S. Army squads then arrive in armored personnel carriers and set up the heavy (155 mm) and light (120 mm) versions of recoilless launchers. The Davy Crockett fired a nuclear round that decimated the mock opposing force. The Davy Crockett was deployed from 1961 to 1971. The heavy version was transported by either an armored personnel carrier or a large truck. The light version was generally carried on and fired from an Army jeep, but could be carried for a short distance and fired by a 3-man team. The W-54 nuclear warhead in a projectile was launched by the Davy Crockett and had a subkiloton yield. The projectile was 30 inches long, 11 inches in diameter, and weighed 76 pounds. The l55 mm launcher had a maximum range of 13,000 feet, and the 120 mm could reach a distance of 6,561 feet.

What is up engine heads, today we will be taking a detailed look at timing belts and timing chains. We will compare one with the other and dive deep into the benefits and drawbacks of both of these critical engine components all while presenting objective facts on both of these. So what does a timing belt or a timing chain actually do? Well the key word here is "timing" and timing in this case refers to the relationship between your pistons and your camshafts and valves. For an engine to run properly this relationship must be constant and maintained at all times. Chains are more resistant to wear because of course metal resists wear better than rubber. But there's a catch. Metal resists wear well only when it's lubricated and this brings us to our first big difference between timing chains and belts. Belts run dry but chains are splash lubricated by the oil in your engine. This means that chains must be sealed away from the environment to prevent oil leaks. The easiest way to tell if your engine has a belt or chain is to look at the engine. If it has plastic covers on the front, it's likely running a timing belt, if it has a sealed metal cover than it's likely running a chain. Because they are more durable timing chains have much longer service intervals than belts, some chains don't even have service intervals. They last the life of the engine. Even if you don't use the engine at all, a belt should be replaced after 6-10 years, depending on the engine. This is because rubber naturally deteriorates and degrades with time. Timing belts are sensitive to oil and coolant spills, which can significantly shorten their life. High temperatures also contribute to increased rubber wear. A typical modern timing belt needs to be replaced every 60.000 - 100.000 miles. When timing chains do have service intervals, they are need to be replaced every 80.000 - 120.000 miles. While timing belts are generally the same and don't differ much in terms of their design, timing chains come in two main different types - the silent chain and the roller chain. Silent chains minimize the amount of noise created by chain and sprocket assembly. Silent chains are very common in engines and are loved by manufacturers because they are simple and cheap to manufacture. They are constructed from multiple links connected together by pins. The profile of the links fits the profile of the teeth of the sprocket and voila the chain turns the sprockets. On the other hand roller chains incorporate rollers instead of links. The sprocket teeth fits in between the rollers and the rollers roll on the teeth as the chain rotates the sprocket. This both reduces friction and helps spread loads more evenly which also reduces localized wear. Roller chains can be of a dual or single type and as you're probably guessing dual rollers are more durable but due the increased surface area they also create more friction. The drawback of roller chains is that they are noisier when compared to silent chains and that they are also more sensitive to debris and contaminants in engine oil. The first ever engine with a rubber toothed belt was racing car built by Bill Devin in the early 50s. It was a Frankenstein engine that used two Norton Manx cylinders on a Panhard crankcase and an overhead cam layout. The first ever mass produced car to feature a timing belt engine was the West German 1962 Glas 1004. In 1966 Fiat also introduced the first twin cam engine driven by a rubber toothed belt and in the same year the United States got their first belt driven engine in the form of Pontiac's overhead straight six engine. So does this mean that belts are the better choice and that you should choose and engine with a belt instead? No, it simply means that the demands put on today's engines have equalized belt and chain statistics and that some of the good reputation chains had doesn't apply anymore. The reality is that both engine drive systems are equally good provided you maintain your engine and replace components with quality ones when needed. What's more important than belt or chain is maintenance as well as research. Before buying a car with a certain engine, make sure to do your research well and get acquainted with the engine's weak spots so you know what too look out for inspecting the vehicle and can accurately predict realistic maintenance cost that best suit your budget, needs and preferences. Subscribe to Nuclear Vault http://bit.ly/SubscribeNuclearVault Project RULISON was a gas stimulation Plowshare Program nuclear test. Plowshare was a program that promoted using the energy produced from nuclear explosions for peaceful uses and applications. The 40-kiloton RULISON test was detonated 6 miles west of Grand Valley, Colorado, on September 10, 1969. Its purpose was to release natural gas reserves locked tightly in the sandstone and shale Mesa Verde formation. The estimated cost for the RULISON project was 6.5 million dollars, funded primarily by the Austral Oil Company of Houston, Texas. The video shows the explosion, underground rock fracturing, gas release, and underground well operations in schematic animation. Footage of the site, including the actual nuclear explosive package, is shown before the test explosion, but not during or after the test.

BP aims to be net-zero by 2050. British Petroleum recently announced a new green initiative, BP will spend more on clean energy and less on fossil fuels going forward. By 2050, BP aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, joining a growing list of governments and corporations committed to tackling climate change. Is the BP Net-Zero Plan actually good for the environment? The most important part of the plan is that BP is to sell off a large chunk of its oil and gas assets. When BP sells these assets, BP shareholders are paid the fair value of these buried oil assets. The producer who can pay the most to buy them, will be the producer who can extract the oil at the lowest possible cost, possibly by skirting best practices in terms of health and safety and environmental practices. In economics people talk about the law of unintended consequences, which is often used as a warning that an intervention in a complex system can sometimes bring about unanticipated and often undesirable outcomes. Is selling these assets off as part of an environmental drive by BP likely to bring about the unintended consequence of the assets being exploited by operators who are less environmentally friendly than the current asset owner? Subscribe to Nuclear Vault http://bit.ly/SubscribeNuclearVault The camera angle on the July 10, 1962, Operation Dominic SUNSET test provides one of the most spectacular views of the one-megaton thermonuclear blast near Christmas Island in the Pacific Proving Ground. The brilliant fireball is seen just above a huge atomic cloud, then seconds later, ice rings begin to form above the fireball. An incredible view emerges as an ice cap forms above the ice rings. It is amazing that an explosion with such force can produce such a beautiful image. With incredible color and slow-motion intensity, this short video graphically presents the torrential growth of a megaton explosion’s fireball forming into a huge mushroom cloud.

These weapons-related devices were dropped from B-52’s staged out of Hawaii from April 27 to July 11, 1962. After the Soviet Union resumed atmospheric testing in violation of a treaty with the United States, President Kennedy authorized the U.S. to resume atmospheric testing on March 2, 1962. The video, comprised of small rolls of film that had never been released, shows the fireballs of 16 nuclear devices being fired off the southern end of Christmas Island, which had been used earlier by the British for nuclear testing. The United States was striving to increase the yield-to-weight ratio of weapons so they could be delivered by existing aircraft. Subscribe to Nuclear Vault http://bit.ly/SubscribeNuclearVault A previous video release, “Dominic Fireballs,” (silent with captions) featured 16 nuclear bursts conducted near Christmas Island in 1962 and presented a general visual overview of the test operation. This documentary presents a brief history of the British-owned Christmas Island and the agreement that allowed the United States to use it as a staging area for 24 atmospheric tests. However, only three nuclear blasts are shown, each representing a different aspect of Operation Dominic I. The first test shown was ADOBE, detonated on April 25, 1962, which had a yield of 190 kilotons (kt). This was a proof test of a device prior to it going into the nuclear weapons stockpile. The second test, FRIGATE BIRD, involved a warhead (yield not given) launched on May 6, 1962, from the submarine Ethan Allen and carried to its target by a Polaris missile. It was an atmospheric test. The third test, SWORDFISH, a low-yield device, was a system proof test of an antisubmarine rocket (ASROC) conducted on May 11, 1962. The weapon, an atomic depth charge, was successfully detonated underwater after its ride on the ASROC. EG&G OPERATION DOMINIC SCIENTIFIC PHOTOGRAPHY BLUESTONE EVENT 10:00 (Silent) This video shows the BLUESTONE thermonuclear airdrop from several vantage points at various camera speeds and focal lengths. Conducted near Christmas Island in the Pacific, BLUESTONE had a yield of 1.27 megatons. This test does not have the familiar mushroom cloud effect, but forms a huge circular fireball and as it expands, forms a large ring. BLUESTONE was but one of many Dominic I tests dedicated to research and development of thermonuclear devices. The Dominic I series was ordered after the Soviet Union had resumed testing nuclear weapons.

The authors used a special self-propagating photocurable resin, electroless nickel plating and a special solution to dissolve the resin. I have a cheap resin printer and some DIY copper/nickel electroplating baths. In this video we see if we can recreate their result, and work through the challenges of COTS materials. I started with resin prints + copper/nickel plating, but due to gas pressure during thermal decomposition of the resin, eventually switched to PLA FDM printing. And if you’re a cocoon for yourself: Remember that the caterpillar has to dissolve itself into mush to become a beautiful, rule-breaking moth. So if you're a sobbing mess wrapped up in your bed right now: Keep going, you're gonna turn out amazing. This song is for my intrepid daughter, Indigo. “Stop worrying dad.” - Indi, aged 3.
